Constance Zimmer Reveals Breast Cancer Battle and Pure Shock and Fear After Diagnosis

Constance Zimmer has revealed she secretly battled breast cancer while promoting her acclaimed FX series earlier this year.

The 55-year-old actress shared the news in a candid Instagram post Sunday, disclosing that she received her diagnosis during a Zoom call with her doctor on March 13 while she was away from home. “On March 13th when I was away from home – I heard these words from my doctor over Zoom: ‘You have DCIS, also refereed to as Stage 0 breast cancer,'” she recalled on the platform. “The silence was deafening.”

Zimmer described the health struggle as the “biggest secret [she’s] ever held,” confiding only in those closest to her. Her husband, Russ Lamoureux, was her first call after receiving the news. Daughter Colette was also among the small circle who knew.

The “Entourage” alum detailed the emotional weight of navigating treatment decisions in the months that followed. “The mental toll that followed was overwhelming … as I began talking to many more doctors then I would’ve liked,” she wrote on Instagram, noting that she felt “like [her] options were limited.”

Most physicians she consulted pushed for speed above all else. “Most suggested what was the quickest way to get this mass out ASAP, which was a mastectomy,” Zimmer explained in her post.

That standard path did not sit right with her. “What if that’s not what I want?” she asked herself. “What if I want to save my boob instead?”

After further consultation, Zimmer opted for a lumpectomy, the breast-conserving procedure that removes a tumor and a small margin of surrounding healthy tissue. The choice came with added complexity: the surgery required three separate procedures across three consecutive weeks. “It did take three surgeries — three weeks in a row, but she did it, she saved my breast and it looks good too!” Zimmer gushed on Instagram.

The timeline of her treatment overlapped almost entirely with a major professional moment. Zimmer starred as Ann Marie Messina, mother of Carolyn Bessette, in FX’s “Love Story,” which premiered earlier this year. While the limited series generated awards attention — including an Emmy nomination for Zimmer — she was simultaneously managing surgeries and follow-up radiation without public acknowledgment.

“During all of this I was out on a very public press tour for ‘Love Story,’ while keeping my diagnosis and treatment private,” she remembered on Instagram. “I then followed my surgeries with radiation, while celebrating my Emmy nomination.”

Zimmer’s announcement arrived timed to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, opening with a reflection she never expected to make. “October is #breastcancerawarenessmonth and I never thought I’d be honoring it with my own story,” she wrote.

The actress made clear she has reached the other side of her ordeal. She is now cancer-free and used her platform to urge preventive action. “To please not wait until you have symptoms to get yourself checked in all ways possible,” she encouraged her followers.

Her closing words captured the dissonance of her year. “From hospital gowns to Emmy glamour, this was one hell of a ride,” Zimmer wrote on Instagram.

She is now “celebrating what [her] body got [her] through over the last seven months: pure shock and fear alongside pure joy and gratitude.”
