Craig Melvin pleaded with Carson Daly to rescue him on live television after his interview with Parker Posey spiraled into a double disaster.
The “Today” show anchor, 47, turned to his co-host during Monday morning’s broadcast and begged, “save me, please,” following a pair of excruciating exchanges with the actress. Posey, 57, had appeared on the NBC program to discuss her recent work, but the conversation quickly veered off script in ways neither party anticipated.
The first mishap struck when Melvin attempted to pivot the discussion toward Posey’s rumored horror film. “It’s time to talk horror,” he announced. The “White Lotus” alum leaned forward with a startled expression, straining to catch his words. Melvin immediately recognized the misunderstanding and rushed to correct himself. “No, hor-ror,” he emphasized, drawing out the syllables.
Posey then revealed what she had heard. “I thought you called me a whore,” she said, leaving Melvin scrambling to defend his enunciation. “I did not call you a whore!” he fired back. “H-o-r-r-, horror, I did not enunciate well.”
The anchor pressed forward, trying to salvage the segment by asking about an upcoming movie titled “Sleepover.” News had broken on Oct. 13 that Posey was attached to star in the Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal Pictures project, slated for release next year. The actress shut him down flat. “I’m not doing it,” she stated. Melvin checked his notes and pushed back, insisting, “It says right here that you’re doing ‘Sleepover.'” Posey held firm, repeating that she was “not doing it anymore.”
The tension thickened into another prolonged silence. Posey began fanning herself with a stack of papers, admitting she was “sweating.” She offered a brief explanation for the reversal: “I was [doing] it. Yeah, it’s not happening anymore. Something came up.”
Melvin acknowledged the mounting discomfort, remarking that the interview had taken an “even more awkward than usual” turn. In a desperate bid to reset the mood, he invoked Posey’s “White Lotus” character, crying out her catchphrase: “Piper, no!”
Posey proved more resilient than her host, brushing off the stumbles and declaring their exchange “funny.” She closed with a playful jab, referencing People magazine’s recent designation of Melvin as the Sexiest Morning Show Host.
The two had previously shared screen time in March 2025, when Melvin interviewed Posey about her acclaimed performance in “White Lotus.” During that appearance, he had praised her accent as “hands-down, one of the best parts” of the HBO series. Monday’s reunion delivered a markedly different energy, with the Golden Globe nominee inadvertently keeping the journalist on his heels from start to finish.
The “Sleepover” project, which Posey has now exited, had been positioned as a major genre entry for the veteran actress. Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, the production entities behind the film, have become dominant forces in horror cinema through franchises including “The Conjuring” universe and “Halloween” reboots. Universal Pictures had been set to distribute.
Neither Posey nor the production companies have publicly addressed the specific “something” that caused her departure from the film.
