Creepy Truth Behind Disturbing Rumpelstiltskin Video That’s Giving People Nightmares

A TV blogger has exposed a viral clip as generative AI after viewers mistook it for footage from a 1987 family film.

Kevin Smith, who posts under the handle @moviemanmanman on Instagram, announced last Sunday that the 30-second video is “1000% generative AI” despite its vintage appearance. The clip shows a blonde woman screaming in a hay-filled stable as a gnome-like figure approaches, performs a dance, converts the hay to gold coins, and finally transforms into a handsome prince after she kisses him. Many social media users had assumed the footage came from the 1987 musical movie “Rumpelstiltskin,” which starred Amy Irving, Billy Barty, Clive Revill, and Priscilla Pointer and followed a miller’s daughter receiving help from a mischievous dwarf.

Smith, in a video posted to his Instagram page on October 5, explained how he reached his conclusion.

“I feel like the clip is throwing everyone for a loop because it looks like, it genuinely does look like an old time, ’60s, ’50s film, but this is 1000% generative AI. Like, it’s AI,” he said. “I have been combing the stratospheres of the internet trying to figure out if this is from a real movie. It’s not.”

The revelation has sparked widespread discussion about the growing sophistication of AI-generated content and its potential to deceive viewers. The original 1987 film’s synopsis, per IMDb, describes a story in which a miller’s daughter gets help from a mischievous dwarf and later faces trouble, with only herself and a mute servant girl standing between her baby son and danger.

Online reactions to Smith’s findings have ranged from alarm to dark humor about the bizarre prompt engineering that might have produced the scene. One person wrote on Twitter: “The scariest part is how many people will assume it’s from an old film. ‘Looks real’ is no longer evidence of anything.”

Another user questioned the creative process behind the clip, asking: “How do you even prompt this.”

A third person offered a detailed imagined prompt that highlighted the unsettling elements of the video: “My biggest question is, what was even the prompt? Make a little boy Rumplestiltskin, and have him creepily caress the blonde woman’s face. Have him do a jig while his face never changes, and then he makes the woman happy by bringing her gold. Oh, and have her kiss the creepy boy on the lips, but it’s ok because he’ll turn into a man.”

The case joins a growing number of incidents in which AI-generated video has successfully mimicked the aesthetic of older media, exploiting the gaps in searchable film archives and the trusting assumptions of viewers encountering unfamiliar footage. Smith’s methodical debunking — emphasizing his exhaustive search across internet archives — underscores the difficulty of verifying visual content in an era of rapidly improving generative tools.

The 1987 “Rumpelstiltskin” film itself, a musical adaptation of the classic fairy tale, has seen renewed attention as a result of the confusion, though its actual content bears no resemblance to the viral clip’s strange narrative of transformation through gold and kiss.
