There has been an ongoing debate about what constitutes the ‘best plot twist in cinematic history’, and many argue that a particular psychological thriller deserves to be considered for the top spot.
Numerous unforgettable plot twists have captivated audiences over the years. One of my personal favorites is the moment in Crazy, Stupid, Love where all the different storylines converge in a comical manner, despite not being a big fan of rom-coms.
However, today’s focus is not on Steve Carell, Emma Stone, and Ryan Gosling. Instead, this narrative centers around actors Grace Caroline Currey and Virginia Gardner, portraying best friends Becky and Shiloh.
The duo sets out to climb a 2,000-foot TV tower to scatter the ashes of Becky’s husband Dan, who tragically lost his life in a climbing accident.
But when the ladder they use to ascend the tower collapses, they find themselves trapped at the top, unable to descend to safety.
As if that wasn’t harrowing enough, their bag containing essential supplies, including water, tumbles out of reach, and the women find their phones non-functional, making a call for help impossible.
The film in question is the survival thriller Fall, released in 2022, which left audiences feeling ‘sick to their stomach’.
A Twitter user shared a clip from the film revealing a peek of the plot twist, captioning it: “One of the most horrifying plot twists in the history of cinema.”
Other social media participants quickly joined the discussion, with one remarking: “Didn’t expect that twist at all, total mindgame. Cinema alpha if you ask me.”
Another added: “It was a wild one for sure. Gave me anxiety like a mofo.”
Someone else commented: “I watched this on an airplane. I don’t recommend watching on an airplane.”
This elicited a response from another viewer, who said: “I need to NOT think about heights at all while I’m flying.”
Meanwhile, another user questioned the realism of the scene, noting: “Yall have no idea how bright and hot those lights are.
“Mind you, I’ve never worked for a company that built or maintained these towers.”
So let’s get into the details of the plot twist—if you’re planning to watch Fall, be aware that a spoiler is forthcoming!
According to several commenters on the post, the twist involves Becky’s friend speaking to her, even though she died earlier in the film.
“The plot twist is that the friend below her died earlier from falling onto the platform and she’s been hallucinating her alive the entire time,” one user elaborated.
Another clarified: “The last scene shows the blonde chick is not really there on the platform, meaning the brunette chick has been hallucinating her for some time. THAT is the plot twist.”
Fall is definitely worth a viewing, boasting a 6.4 rating on IMDb and a 79 percent approval on Rotten Tomatoes.
