Director Explains Why Billy Evans Was Filmed Completely Nude in the Shower With Everything Visible

Lance Oppenheim has broken his silence on the full-frontal shower scene that has audiences talking about the new Elizabeth Holmes documentary.

The filmmaker, who co-directed “You Can See Everything” with Nathan Fielder, told Vulture that Billy Evans simply stripped down and stepped into the shower unprompted during filming. The A24 documentary, released in the US last week, tracks 34 days in the life of Holmes, 40, and Evans in the weeks before she began serving her federal prison sentence for Theranos-related fraud.

Oppenheim, 28, described the couple as remarkably open from day one. “You get to their house, and her computer’s open,” he explained in the interview. “All of her emails are open. Her journal is open on the side of the couch.”

The shower sequence arrives shortly after a gym workout scene featuring Evans. The camera pans up his unclothed body before he towels off and nearly collides with Fielder. Oppenheim said the moment came about organically when Evans announced he needed to shower and immediately removed his clothes without waiting for direction. “It seems like he really had something he wanted to show to us and to the world,” the director added.

Holmes and Evans invited the film crew into their home approximately one month before she surrendered to authorities. The documentary captures their domestic routine during this liminal period, with the couple apparently exercising few boundaries around what they allowed to be filmed.

The Theranos saga began with Holmes founding the blood-testing company in 2003, eventually attracting $700 million in investment and a $9 billion valuation based on claims that its devices could run comprehensive tests from just a few drops of blood. Wall Street Journal investigative reporter John Carreyrou, alongside medical research professor John Ioannidis and clinical biochemistry professor Eleftherios Diamandis, helped expose the technology as fundamentally flawed.

Legal consequences followed rapidly. Holmes and former Theranos president Sunny Balwani faced wire fraud and conspiracy charges. A jury convicted Holmes on four counts, and a judge sentenced her to 11 years and three months in federal prison. The company dissolved in 2018 amid cascading lawsuits and regulatory sanctions.

Holmes is currently incarcerated at Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas. The documentary’s title, “You Can See Everything,” appears to function on multiple levels — referencing both the couple’s apparent exhibitionism with the filmmakers and the broader theme of exposure surrounding Holmes’s collapsed empire.

A24 has built a reputation for distributing unconventional documentaries, and this latest release continues that tradition with what reviewers have noted among its most talked-about sequences. The shower scene has already generated significant social media discussion since the film’s theatrical debut.

The filmmakers’ access extended beyond physical spaces into Holmes’s digital life, with her emails and personal journal left visible during filming. This transparency, whether strategic or genuine, provided Oppenheim and Fielder with material that spans from mundane domestic details to Evans’s unexpected on-camera nudity.
