Doctor explains why a single alcoholic beverage may be the ‘healthiest option’ with scientific support

A doctor has pointed out that one alcoholic beverage might be considered ‘healthier’ than others, and there is scientific evidence to support this claim.

It’s not every day that a doctor suggests one type of alcohol as being ‘healthier’ than another.

However, when it comes to overall health, it’s clear that water is always a preferable choice over alcoholic drinks.

Gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi, who practices in California, has identified what he believes to be the ‘healthiest choice’ for those who enjoy an occasional drink.

Dr. Sethi emphasized that no amount of alcohol is beneficial to your health, but he recommended a drink made from the ‘agave plant,’ which is low in sugar and carbohydrates.

Studies have shown that this spirit does not cause a significant rise in blood sugar levels like other alcoholic drinks do.

The drink in question?

It’s tequila! Additionally, it’s naturally gluten-free, making it a great option for those with gluten intolerance.

Agave, the plant used to make tequila, contains compounds like fructans and fructooligosaccharides, which serve as prebiotics, promoting a healthy gut microbiota and aiding digestion.

Alcohol is generally harmful because it breaks down into a toxin that can damage DNA and hinder its repair.

While tequila still initiates this process, it is reportedly slower, which might reduce the severity of hangovers.

Dr. Sethi explained to the New York Post: “Tequila is metabolised into acetaldehyde at a slower rate than other alcoholic beverages. This slower metabolism may explain why some people report fewer hangovers with tequila.”

However, there is a caveat.

Dr. Sethi added: “These benefits apply only to one hundred percent agave tequila. Mixing tequila with sugary drinks negates potential advantages.”

So, the key might be in the straight shot, an option that might not typically be advised!

Compared to a shot of vodka at 96 calories, tequila contains significantly fewer calories at just 64.

Despite promoting this ‘healthier’ alcohol option, Dr. Sethi emphasized that moderation is essential.

He noted: “The healthiest option is to avoid alcohol as much as possible.”

That certainly puts things into perspective!
