Doctor highlights 10 warning signs you must not overlook to safeguard against ‘silent killer’ ailment

A doctor has highlighted 10 signs and symptoms of a prevalent and deadly disease you should be aware of.

Our health often takes a backseat, and we may overlook troubling symptoms that should be addressed promptly.

The National Center for Health Statistics identifies several conditions frequently ranking among the leading causes of death in the United States.

These include Covid-19, diabetes, chronic liver disease, and Alzheimer’s, while three others contribute significantly to mortality rates, with accidental injuries resulting in 222,698 deaths. Cancer accounted for 613,352 deaths in 2023.

The leading cause, with around 680,981 fatalities, is often termed the ‘silent killer’ due to its connection to heart health.

An expert has now shared ten heart-related symptoms you should monitor.

The heart is a crucial organ that tirelessly pumps blood throughout the body.

Any interruption in its function, even momentarily, can lead to severe consequences, including potential brain damage due to oxygen deprivation.

Contrary to popular belief, heart disease is not confined to older individuals.

Dr. Ameet Bakhai, a consultant cardiologist at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation, noted an increase in heart problems among younger individuals, partly due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Heart disease can affect people of all ages, particularly in the era of Covid and beyond, as the virus can attack the heart and the heart lining quite commonly as a condition called myopericarditis,” Dr Bakhai said (via The Mirror).

The Cleveland Clinic describes myopericarditis as an inflammation affecting the heart, including the pericardium, which is the protective lining surrounding the heart.

Emphasizing the importance of heart health, Dr. Bakhai stated, “There’s no annual MOT to be passed for most of us, so we ignore the small signals that our own engine is not performing ideally.”

“Heart issues can often get progressively worse, until one day you have a more complicated issue – that could have been avoided if you’d heeded the warning signs.”

Dr. Bakhai also mentioned: “So, looking after your heart health is essential and should be planned as a new year resolution every year.”

He warned of symptoms that might indicate heart disease: “Warning signs like chest tightness, aches in your arms or jaw, dizziness on standing, breathlessness with bending down should act like a wake-up call that your heart is calling out for help.”

1. Dizziness when you stand up quickly

2. Shortness of breath

3. Difficulty bending down

4. Palpitations

5. Chest tightness

6. Pain in the neck or upper arms, particularly on the left

7. Difficulty standing up

8. Discomfort, including tightness, in the chest

9. Swollen legs

10. Frequent skipped or extra heartbeats
