Lainey Mae Parton has broken her silence following her aunt’s private burial.
The niece of Dolly Parton, 80, took to Instagram on Saturday, one day after relatives gathered for an intimate Nashville funeral to lay the country legend to rest. Lainey waited until after the service to post, explaining she needed time before she could put her grief into words.
“This is a really hard post for me to make,” she wrote on the platform. “I wanted to wait until after my granny was laid to rest yesterday before I tried to put any of this into words.”
Lainey’s tribute centered on the bond she shared with a woman the world knew as a superstar but she simply called “granny.” She emphasized that Parton, who had no children of her own, treated her nieces and nephews with a maternal devotion that filled that space. “Because she couldn’t have kids of her own, she always made us feel like we were hers,” Lainey shared. “She loved us that way, and I’ll forever be grateful for that.”
The younger Parton recalled how her aunt’s support started early and never wavered. “From the time I was little, my granny always had a way of making me feel like I was enough,” she wrote. “She never made my dreams feel too big or made me feel like I couldn’t do something. She believed in me before I even knew how to believe in myself.”
That belief translated into concrete opportunities. While Lainey was still a freshman in high school, Parton invited her to sing on an album — a prospect that terrified the teenager. “But she had a way of making me feel like nothing bad could happen,” Lainey continued. “She made me feel safe, confident, and like I belonged right there beside her.”
The support extended beyond emotional encouragement into financial backing. When Lainey chose beauty school over a traditional college path, Parton not only withheld judgment but actively championed the decision. “She told me she couldn’t see me doing anything else,” Lainey recounted. “She financially supported me through school and helped me get my career started. She didn’t just tell me to chase my dreams, she helped me get there.”
Lainey’s reflections carried an unmistakable note of gratitude for having seized moments with her aunt while she could. Their shared history included appearing together in a film, experiences Lainey now holds as tangible keepsakes. “I’m so thankful I said yes to the opportunities and memories I got to share with her as my Aunt Dolly,” she wrote. “I’m so glad I have those moments to look back on now. I have things I can watch, hear, and hold onto when I miss her.”
The emotional weight of the post was heightened by Lainey’s assertion that her memories of Parton were unblemished. “Most people can think of at least one bad memory with everyone in their family,” she observed. “I honestly can’t think of one with her.”
Parton died last week following what her representatives described as a brief battle with cancer. The announcement came through a formal statement that praised her lifelong generosity and impact: “Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched.
