Donald Trump recently made headlines by referring to the United States as a ‘stupid country’ during a discussion about birthright citizenship.
Since assuming the presidency on January 20, Trump has been working to fulfill his campaign slogan of ‘Make America Great Again.’ His approach includes reevaluating trade agreements, and addressing drugs, crime, and immigration.
Part of his immigration strategy has involved deporting numerous migrants, invoking wartime laws to send individuals to El Salvador without legal proceedings, and incentivizing voluntary departure for non-citizens with a cash bonus.
Controversially, the Trump administration has been exploring the possibility of ending birthright citizenship, which is enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. This amendment states that ‘all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens.’
An executive order was issued declaring that US citizenship should not be granted to children born in the country to parents without permanent residency, including illegal immigrants or those on temporary visas.
This decision was met with resistance from federal judges, who blocked the order in Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform to urge the Supreme Court to revisit the issue. He argued that the original intention of birthright citizenship was to protect ‘the babies of slaves,’ and that its current application is inappropriate.
He wrote: “Birthright Citizenship was not meant for people taking vacations to become permanent Citizens of the United States of America, and bringing their families with them, all the time laughing at the “SUCKERS” that we are!
“The United States of America is the only Country in the World that does this, for what reason, nobody knows — But the drug cartels love it!”
He continued, labeling the US a ‘stupid country’ and critiqued the policy for contributing to national dysfunction.
Trump elaborated: “As conclusive proof, the Civil War ended in 1865, the Bill went to Congress less than a year later, in 1866, and was passed shortly after that. It had nothing to do with Illegal Immigration for people wanting to SCAM our Country, from all parts of the World, which they have done for many years. It had to do with Civil War results, and the babies of slaves who our politicians felt, correctly, needed protection.
“Please explain this to the Supreme Court of the United States. Again, remember, the Civil War ended in 1865, and the Bill goes to Congress in 1866 — We didn’t have people pouring into our Country from all over South America, and the rest of the World. It wasn’t even a subject.
“What we had were the BABIES OF SLAVES. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Good luck with this very important case. GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.!”
As the Supreme Court gears up to debate the matter, Trump asserts that the judges lack the authority to halt presidential orders of nationwide scope.
A justice department official commented that such injunctions hinder Trump’s policy objectives and constitute a ‘direct attack’ on the administration, according to the BBC.
