Donald Trump Reacts to Historic Appointment of First American Pope

Donald Trump, after humorously suggesting he wanted to assume the role of pope, has now reacted to the announcement of Pope Francis’ successor.

Pope Francis passed away last month at the age of 88 at Domus Sanctae Marthae in Vatican City.

Speculation arose regarding who would succeed him, with eight cardinals notably considered potential candidates for the position.

Today, the conclave concluded its highly confidential meeting and revealed the new pope.

The chosen successor is 69-year-old Cardinal Robert Prevost, who will be known as Pope Leo XIV.

Donald Trump had previously joked about his own potential candidacy for the papacy and shared a humorous image of himself in the role. Now, how does he feel about someone else taking the position?

The former President has shown no disappointment at not being selected, especially as an American has been appointed as the head of the Church.

On Truth Social, Trump commented: “Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country.

“I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”

Pope Leo XIV makes history as the first American pope, having been born in Chicago.

He was previously the Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru from 2015 to 2023, and headed the Order of Saint Augustine from 2001 to 2013.

The historic announcement was made from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, following the gathering of the Catholic church’s senior figures in Rome to elect the new pope.

There are over 240 cardinals worldwide, with the number of papal electors usually limited to 120.

Only cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote.

Under the ornate ceiling of the Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo, a reported 138 eligible voters cast their votes up to four times daily over two days, resulting in a two-thirds majority in favor of Pope Leo XIV.

Better luck next time, Trump?
