Donald Trump has addressed the world regarding his potential candidacy for president again, even though the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution stands in his way.
Currently, Trump cannot run for president in the next election due to the restriction imposed by the 22nd Amendment, which limits a person from serving more than two terms in office.
Despite this, the former Republican president has been hinting at a possible return to the political stage since re-entering the White House in January. He has mentioned ‘loopholes’ that might allow him to be the Republican nominee in 2028.
US Representative Andy Ogles has proposed an amendment to the law, suggesting it should state: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
In an interview with CNBC on Tuesday (August 6), Trump was directly questioned about his plans for the presidency, to which he replied: “No, probably not, probably not. I’d like to … I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had.”
He continued: “You know why. Because people love the tariffs, and they love the trade deals, and they love that countries – they love that foreign countries aren’t ripping us off. For years, they ripped us. A friend, and foe and a friend. And the friends were worse.”
Over the years, Trump has participated in numerous interviews hinting at a 2028 run, previously telling MSNBC: “I have never had requests so strong as that. But it’s something to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do.
“There are many people selling the 2028 hat, but this is not something I’m looking to do. I’m looking to having four great years, and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican.”
He concluded: “A great Republican to carry it forward. But I think we’re going to have four years, and four years is plenty of time to do something really spectacular.”
When asked by CNBC about his potential successor since he suggests he will not run, Trump mentioned Vice President JD Vance as a prominent candidate.
“In all fairness, he’s the vice president,” Trump said. “And he would be probably favoured at this point.”
