Doritos enthusiasts upset as brand teases significant alteration to its chips after six decades

Chip enthusiasts have taken to social media to express their opinions after Doritos UK announced a potential significant change.

Devoted chip fans are known for their loyalty, and there was even a time I needed to be hypnotized to curb my habit of consuming at least five packets daily at work.

One particular chip brand, with its devout following, has stirred up some controversy.

Doritos, which made its debut in 1964, has become a beloved snack, but a substantial alteration could be on the horizon.

The UK branch of Doritos shared a post on Instagram yesterday (January 13).

The posted image depicts what seems to be a Dorito chip, but it’s strikingly different—boasting four sides instead of the traditional three, transforming from a triangle to a square or diamond shape.

The caption on the image reads: “The shape of things to come.”

Another online image offers a ‘size comparison’ between the familiar triangular Dorito that we all know and love and the new ‘square version,’ with the square chip appearing larger at first glance. But is bigger necessarily better?

The social media post quickly stirred up a storm, with chip enthusiasts flocking to the comments section to voice their opinions.

One Instagram user remarked: “Doritos without a [triangle] is not a Doritos!”

“This isn’t April 1st, come on…” another chimed in.

A third person commented: “Don’t mess with my triangle!”

“Noooo, you’ve already ruined them with this new ‘bolder crunch,'” a fourth user complained.

A fifth speculated: “Mark my words, the shape change will be to distract from a change in bag size from 180g to 150g but for the same price. Betcha.”

A Doritos spokesperson informed the Mail Online: “The news isn’t ready to be shared quite yet, but great to know how much interest there is in the shape of our chips.

“As you’ve now seen, square Doritos are something we’re exploring and we’ll reveal more officially later this month.”

The discussion has also spilled over onto Twitter.

One user commented: “Yep, cheaper to make squares and use less ingredients. It’s optically larger, but actually less stuff. The rich get richer. Facts check it.”

“Well, it won’t be Doritos anymore, it’s just not the same. The square shape feels more like a cracker, lol,” a second person noted.

A third added: “Why? Change for the sake of change. These young marketing people really need to learn the value of a brand.”

However, some individuals are quite supportive of the potential design change.

One person mentioned: “This obviously is an effort to make them healthier. I’m absolutely sold on this.”

And another concluded: “A square is just two triangles in one.”
