A father in Zhangping, China, has publicly thanked neighbors and property staff who kept his three-year-old daughter from falling to her death after she slipped through a 12th-floor window grille.
The child was left home alone around 7:48 a.m. Last Saturday while her mother went grocery shopping, according to residents who spoke with The Beijing News. The girl somehow squeezed through a window and became trapped by her head in a metal safety grille, leaving her body dangling over the edge of the tall apartment block.
Alerted by photographs shared in a resident group chat, neighbors and a security guard rushed to help from the apartment directly below. The two men hung precariously out of their own window while holding up a small white stool to support the toddler’s feet. They also used a long pole to help steady her as she clung to the side of the building.

Firefighters arrived and broke down the apartment door to reach the child from inside. She was uninjured in the ordeal but was taken to hospital for an examination as a precaution, according to reports.
The girl’s father, who was at work when the incident occurred, later expressed his gratitude to those who came to his daughter’s aid. He thanked his neighbors and the property management team for their heroic efforts in preventing a tragedy.
The rescue drew widespread attention after dramatic footage circulated online showing the tense moments as the men below struggled to keep the child stable. The video captures the neighbor and security guard leaning far out of the 11th-floor window, their bodies angled dangerously as they extended the stool upward toward the trapped toddler.
Window safety grilles are common features in Chinese apartment buildings, designed to prevent falls while allowing ventilation. Incidents of young children becoming stuck in such grilles occur periodically across the country, often prompting debate about child supervision and the design of protective barriers.
The Beijing News reported that residents mobilized quickly after the alarming images appeared in their group chat, demonstrating the role such community messaging channels play in emergency situations. The coordinated response between civilians and emergency services ultimately prevented what could have been a fatal fall.
The mother had reportedly left the child unattended for what was intended to be a brief grocery run. The incident has reignited discussions about the risks of leaving young children home alone, even for short periods.
Local authorities have not indicated whether any charges will be filed against the parents in connection with the incident.
