A driver burned beyond recognition after their vehicle erupted into a fireball at a Long Island toll plaza Monday morning.
The crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. At the northern end of the Sunken Meadow Parkway, where a vehicle slammed into an empty toll booth outside Sunken Meadow State Park in Smithtown, New York State Police said in a press release. The impact was so catastrophic that the car immediately burst into flames, trapping the lone occupant inside.
State police said the blaze was so intense that investigators have been unable to determine even the basic make and model of the vehicle. The driver’s remains were burned beyond recognition, leaving authorities without a confirmed identity.
“One deceased occupant was located inside the vehicle,” troopers wrote in their official statement. “Due to the extensive damage caused by the crash and fire, investigators are working to determine the identity of the deceased occupant and the make and model of the vehicle.”
Smithtown firefighters finally brought the inferno under control shortly before 1 p.m., roughly two hours after the initial impact, according to reports from the scene. The extended firefight underscored the severity of the blaze that consumed both the vehicle and its occupant.
The crash forced the complete shutdown of the park entrance. Troopers and local police officers diverted traffic away from the area while emergency crews worked to extinguish the flames and secure the scene.
Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including New York State Police, state park police, and Suffolk County police. The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation has since taken the lead on the ongoing probe.
The empty toll booth that the vehicle struck sustained damage in the collision, though no other injuries were reported. The park itself, a popular destination in the Smithtown area, was inaccessible to incoming visitors for hours as the investigation got underway.
Authorities have not released any preliminary theory about what caused the driver to lose control and slam into the toll plaza structure. The investigation remains active as forensic experts work to identify the victim through alternative means given the state of the remains.
