Dwayne Johnson’s ‘finest TV show’ set to leave Netflix soon

A highly acclaimed TV series featuring Dwayne Johnson is set to depart from Netflix shortly.

Johnson, widely recognized for his roles in blockbuster films such as Jumanji, Red Notice, Moana, Baywatch, and the Fast and Furious series, has rarely ventured into television roles.

Though he’s appeared in cameo roles on shows like Wizards of Waverly Place, Cory in the House, and Star Trek: Voyager, he hasn’t been a regular cast member in many series, except for his autobiographical comedy Young Rock.

There is one lesser-known series, however, that Johnson headlined which fans claim showcases some of his ‘best work’.

The show, Ballers, features Johnson as Spencer Strasmore, an NFL player who transitions into a career as a financial manager.

Spanning five seasons, the series offers a detailed look into the world of sports representation. It premiered in 2015 and concluded four years later after 47 episodes.

Ballers was created by Stephen Levinson, the producer behind Entourage, making it likely that fans of that show will enjoy this one as well.

The cast also includes John David Washington (Tenet), Arielle Kebbel (The Vampire Diaries), Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine), and Christopher McDonald (Happy Gilmore).

Over the years, viewers have been quick to praise both Ballers and Johnson’s performance in the series.

“So I’ve been binging Ballers, and it’s such a wild show,” one viewer shared back in May, continuing: “But, it’s full of so many powerhouse actors, and it’s honestly some of Dwayne Johnson’s BEST work.”

“Dwayne Johnson’s best acting performance is from his show Ballers,” commented another fan of the series.

A third opinion stated, “Ballers is an A tier show. Probably Dwayne Johnson’s best work to date.”

Praising the series itself, another person noted, “Ballers with Dwayne Johnson really the best show on TV.”

Additionally, someone tweeted, “Ballers on @HBO is the best new show on TV. Dwayne Johnson rocks! Pun intended.”

Initially aired on HBO, Ballers became available on Netflix US in August 2023, but its run on the streaming service is slated to end shortly.

When exactly will it leave? According to Screen Rant, the series will be removed on August 15.

Ballers was reportedly canceled after its fifth season due to a decline in viewership. As reported by NME, the season one finale attracted 1.4 million viewers in the US, a figure that fell to 0.6 million by the end of season four.

Despite this, Ballers received renewed attention when it was added to Netflix. Could this potentially inspire Levinson to consider a sixth season?
