A relative of a man who was critically injured after falling from a cross during a crucifixion reenactment has provided an update on his condition.
The incident occurred on Friday, April 19, during a crucifixion reenactment held by the Vandalia Community Christian Church at the Masonic Cemetery off Route 33 in Weston, West Virginia.
Crucifixion reenactments are a devotional practice observed by some churches during Holy Week. Participants may reenact various aspects of Jesus Christ’s suffering and death, such as self-flagellation, carrying wooden crosses, or even nailing themselves to crosses. These acts serve as a form of respect, sacrifice, personal penance, or a way to invoke goodwill and blessings.
During the event, an 84-year-old man fell approximately 10 feet from one of the crosses around 12:30 p.m.
Three crosses were present, with three men portraying Jesus’ crucifixion as part of the church’s Easter activities.
The men stood on small platforms in costumes while other participants, dressed as Roman centurions and Mary, observed, according to West Virginia News.
Before the unfortunate incident, a church member commented to the outlet: “We are here today, on this windy but gorgeous day, to reenact the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We’ve been doing this for over 20 years.
“We’ve been here in years past when it was raining, [with] sleet, snow and freezing temperatures, but today is perfect. There are people who are on the crosses who represent Jesus and the two thieves.”
The injured man was airlifted to an emergency facility. A family member has since provided a positive update on his condition, noting that he is recovering.
It was noted by acquaintances that the man was not a member of the church but volunteered to help during the event.
As of April 21, a family member informed 5 News that the man is still in intensive care with broken ribs. However, his condition is reportedly improving, and doctors now believe his injuries are not life-threatening, as shared by WDBJ7.
While it’s uncertain if the man was actually nailed to the cross, another participant was reported to have nails driven through his hands, according to the South China Morning Post.
Ruben Enaje, a 64-year-old, reportedly underwent crucifixion for the 36th time in the village of San Pedro Cutud in the Philippines, marking Good Friday this year.
