It’s been a decade since we last saw Emilia Clarke and Jason Momoa gracing our screens together, but their delightful friendship continues to captivate us.
Playing Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, Clarke and Momoa portrayed a controversial couple whose relationship evolved from a violent, coerced union to one of deep affection, ultimately ending in tragedy.
Before Clarke’s character could call Drogo the moon of her life, she had to endure filming several emotionally taxing scenes that were challenging both to watch and to perform.
To alleviate some of the stress, Momoa decided to play a unique prank on Clarke that managed to be both shocking and amusing.
In an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Clarke recounted the prank, saying: “There was the lovely, erm, rape scene early on in season one…so obviously, there’s nudity and you kind of have to try to lighten the mood.
“Not only was it a sex scene, it was a violent sex scene, so [Momoa] decided for one of the scenes to not use a modesty sock, but use a beautiful pink, fluffy sock.
“So getting that close-up of me looking petrified just like, ‘I didn’t want it to happen, it’s huge and it’s pink and I don’t know what to do!'”
Momoa explained his motives during a Game of Thrones Q&A, stating that his goal was to make Clarke laugh.
He recalled that on the day of the prank, it was a cold filming day in Belfast, and their scene kept getting delayed. When the time finally came, Momoa was so fatigued that he decided to lighten the mood with some humor.
“I went down and bought a little bag of these socks. Some fluffy pink polka dot socks with little animals and I put it in…appropriate places. I look around and there are these grips walking around everywhere and I’m like, ‘Whatever it’s like a locker room. It’s all part of making [Clarke] laugh.’
“I turn around and I’m walking towards her and am just doing ridiculous moves just to make fun of her close-up, and she’s trying to hold it together, but she keeps laughing.”
The crew eventually had to ask Momoa to step away to finish the scene, which he thought was a bit much.
“‘I’m the only f***er in here naked! I don’t see anything more appropriate than me having a good time. I mean, this is awkward. Just let me make her laugh and I’ll try to get through this.'”
So, the next time you watch Game of Thrones, try to spot the scene where Momoa’s charming pink sock made its appearance.
Khaleesi and Drogo forever and ever.
