Emma Roberts Has ‘No Regrets’ About Her ‘Weird’ Wedding Dress

Emma Roberts has no regrets about her unconventional bridal look.

The “American Horror Story” actress, 35, defended her custom Monique Lhuillier wedding dress on Tuesday’s episode of Kate and Oliver Hudson’s “Sibling Revelry” podcast, confirming the silk chiffon gown was deliberately “tea dipped” to achieve a ghostly, vintage effect. Roberts married actor Cody John in Sun Valley, Idaho last July at his family’s home.

Roberts admitted she “wanted to look like a haunted doll” on her big day, and the off-white, lace creation delivered exactly that vision.

“The vibe was vintage, lace, form fitting,” she said on the podcast.

The mom of one acknowledged the public found her aesthetic choices strange. “Which people also thought was weird,” she added about the tea-dyeing technique, “but I loved it. And I have no regrets.”

For the reception, Roberts swapped the ethereal gown for a dramatic black strapless Chantilly lace corset with a tea-length skirt. She described that second look’s theme to Vogue as “boudoir saloon.”

The backyard ceremony took place under a tent with roughly 200 guests. Roberts revealed she kept expectations deliberately muted going in, despite the special occasion.

“I had like, not low expectations, but I didn’t want to get too excited about it,” she explained. “Everyone tries to tell you like, there can be drama and this and that. So I was just going into it like, ‘It is what it is.’ It really was one of the best nights of my whole life.”

The couple, who began dating in 2022, kept the guest list flexible. “A couple of people last minute were like, ‘Can I bring so and so?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, sure, fine. Just get here,'” Roberts recalled.

Her father, actor Eric Roberts, did not attend the celebration.

One of the most meaningful moments came when Roberts’ five-year-old son Rhodes, whom she shares with ex Garrett Hedlund, escorted her down the aisle.

“That was like cute and so sweet,” the “Madame Web” star shared. “He was so excited.”

Roberts and John have maintained a relatively private relationship since they were first linked, making the podcast revelations a rare window into their personal lives. The actress has previously spoken about balancing motherhood with her career, and the wedding appeared to center family throughout.

The tea-dipped dress continues a broader trend of celebrity brides embracing unconventional aesthetics, though Roberts’ haunted doll inspiration stands out for its specific, gothic-tinged vision. Monique Lhuillier, the designer behind both the ceremony and reception looks, has dressed numerous Hollywood figures for their weddings.

The Sun Valley setting reflected John’s family connections to the area, with the couple opting for an intimate backyard format rather than a more formal venue. Roberts described the overall experience as “magical” and among her most cherished memories.

Roberts’ candor about her unusual bridal style choice comes as she continues to navigate both her acting career and public scrutiny of her personal life. The “Scream Queens” alum has been open in past interviews about the pressures of growing up in a famous family and establishing her own identity in Hollywood.
