Emma Stone has encountered numerous supernatural characters in her film career, such as in Spider-Man and Zombieland. However, she recently disclosed that her belief in the supernatural extends beyond acting.
During a conversation at the Venice Film Festival, Stone discussed her new sci-fi-comedy film, Bugonia, with reporters.
The film’s storyline revolves around two conspiracy theorists who suspect that the CEO of a prominent corporation, portrayed by Stone, is an extraterrestrial intent on world destruction.
The men, portrayed by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis, plot to abduct the CEO in an attempt to thwart her plans.
This intriguing storyline prompted reporters in Venice to ask Stone about her views on aliens, prompting her to candidly express her beliefs.
“Yes, I’m coming out and saying it,” she declared, “I believe in aliens!”
Stone elaborated, crediting her belief to the influence of renowned astronomer Carl Sagan, known for his work on the potential existence of extraterrestrial life.
The La La Land star commented, “One of my favorite people who has ever lived is Carl Sagan and I fell madly in love with his philosophy, science and how brilliant he is.”
She resonated with Sagan’s perspective on extraterrestrial life, emphasizing that considering Earth as the sole inhabited planet is somewhat egotistical.
She noted, “He very deeply believed the idea that we’re alone in this vast expansive universe – not that we’re being watched – is a pretty narcissistic thing.”
A reporter humorously questioned Stone on how she maintains her human identity in the limelight without becoming an ‘alien’ herself, to which the actress responded in a manner inspired by Bugonia.
“How do you know I’m not an alien?” she quipped.
Stone further elaborated: “I think there’s a tricky aspect to that answer that’s probably longer than anything that anyone would want to listen to right now. I think everyone sort of deals with that now.
“We all can relate to that feeling of someone thinking they know you, feeling like you don’t have much control of the avatar outside of me. Because there’s me, and then there’s me, here. There’s the person who comes here and then there’s the person who I am with my friends and family. They’re the same person, but it’s what I do to keep myself sane.”
