Emmy Rossum has detailed how her years of nude scenes on “Shameless” warped strangers’ perceptions of her and complicated her romantic life.
Rossum, 40, spent nine seasons playing Fiona Gallagher on the Showtime drama, which chronicled the chaotic lives of a working-class Chicago family. She was 24 when the series began, and her character’s frequent intimate scenes became a defining feature of the show. In a September 16 episode of Maria Sharapova’s “Pretty Tough” podcast, the actor explained that her body of work created a body of problems off set.
“It got quite tricky because of the nudity on the show,” she said. “All of the guys that I would go out with had preconceived notions of who I was or how I was sexually.”
Rossum found the inability of some dates to separate performer from performance genuinely startling. She described the confusion as “bizarre,” noting that the gap between her real self and her fictional persona seemed obvious to her but invisible to others.
“You’re trying to figure out who you are. You’re coming into your own as an artist,” she continued. “And there’s also all these preconceived notions about you that are out there that are associated with [you] because your body is your art, right? And and people can get confused.”
One date proved particularly memorable for all the wrong reasons. The man, who told Rossum he harbored presidential ambitions, grew concerned that her onscreen exposure might become a liability for his imagined future campaign. She recalled the exchange with undisguised disbelief.
“He was like, ‘I really want to be president someday.’ And I was like, ‘Wow, that’s like a great goal,'” she said. But the conversation curdled quickly. “He’s like, ‘But I feel like running for office dating someone who’s been like exposed in the way that you have, do you think that would be tricky for me?'”
Rossum’s response came without hesitation. “And I was like, ‘This is an insane conversation to have’.”
The relationship ended there, as the source material indicates.
Rossum originated the role of Fiona Gallagher in 2011 and remained through the ninth season in 2019, departing before the show’s final two seasons. Her character served as the de facto head of the Gallagher household, raising younger siblings while the family’s alcoholic patriarch, Frank, spiraled through schemes and benders. The British-born series, adapted by John Wells for American audiences, became known for its unflinching portrayal of poverty, addiction, and sexuality. Rossum’s nude scenes were neither gratuitous nor unique to her character—multiple cast members appeared in similar situations—yet the visibility of her performance created a persistent public confusion she could not easily escape.
The actor has since found stability with Sam Esmail, creator of “Mr. Robot,” whom she married in 2017. The couple share a five-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son. Rossum described their partnership as rooted in mutual priorities and practical support.
“We’re so like-minded,” she said. “We’re so family first. We’re so work second. But also when one person has to work, the other person takes over the family. When I’m working or on tour or making a movie, he’s there for drop-off and pickup.”
Rossum’s early twenties also included a first marriage to music executive Justin Siegel, which she has discussed in other recent interviews. She wed him at 21 after he presented an ultimatum: break up or get married. That relationship ended before her “Shameless” tenure began.
