Over the past year, Eric Dane devoted significant energy to drawing attention to the motor neuron disease that ultimately claimed his life this week. The Grey’s Anatomy actor died aged 53.
Known for roles in Charmed and Euphoria as well as his long-running work on Grey’s Anatomy, Dane passed away on Thursday afternoon (February 19) after living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He first disclosed his diagnosis publicly in April 2025, as the illness rapidly progressed.
Best remembered by many viewers as Dr. Mark ‘McSteamy’ Sloan, Dane used his platform in the months that followed to press for improved treatment options, while also encouraging wider understanding of ALS and its impact.
Two months before his death, the father-of-two shared what would become his final social media update—marking another step in his advocacy work and offering a sobering glimpse into the day-to-day toll the condition was taking.

In an announcement made in the days leading up to Christmas, Dane said he would be joining the board of Target ALS, a motor neuron disease charity focused on accelerating research by reducing obstacles and improving collaboration and data sharing.
“This disease takes something from me every day. But I won’t let it take my spirit. Target ALS embodies that relentless spirit, and that’s why I’m joining the Board,”
Target ALS described Dane as a strong voice for the community, and highlighted the significance of his involvement in a statement celebrating his appointment.
“We’re proud to share an important announcement: Eric Dane has joined the Target ALS Board of Directors, deepening his commitment to accelerating ALS research and driving meaningful change for the ALS community.”
The organization also noted that his decision reflected the drive he brought to confronting his diagnosis.
“His decision to join our Board reflects the same relentless spirit he brings to his personal journey.”
Alongside a photo of the actor, the charity shared Dane’s final public remarks about ALS and his hopes for what research could achieve.
“I’m looking forward to working alongside the Target ALS team to continue pushing the limits of what’s possible and changing what it means to get an ALS diagnosis.
“This community deserves effective treatments, and I want to do my part to deliver them.”

Just two months later, Dane died from the disease, which steadily robs people of the ability to move and can ultimately affect eating, speaking, and breathing without support.
His representatives shared a statement following his death, noting that he was surrounded by loved ones at the end of his life.
“He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife [actor Rebecca Gayheart] and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.
“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always.
“Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
