Netflix has released a new documentary that has left viewers emotionally affected, urging others to be prepared with tissues due to its poignant and heart-wrenching content.
Although it has only recently become available on the streaming service, the documentary is already receiving high praise on social media for its compelling yet tragic narrative.
The film centers on the life of Jason Corbett, who relocated from Limerick, Ireland to the United States in April 2011 with his two children after marrying Molly Martens, an American. This move followed the death of Jason’s first wife, Mags, who passed away from an asthma attack in 2006. Molly initially worked as an au pair during her travels and eventually developed a romantic relationship with Jason.
The couple moved to North Carolina and appeared to live an ideal family life, with Molly taking on the role of a mother to Jason’s children, Jack and Sarah. However, the reality was far from perfect.
Tragically, on August 2, 2015, Jason was violently killed in his home, beaten with a baseball bat and a brick. This incident led to the arrest of Molly and her father, Thomas Martens, a retired FBI agent. They were both convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to serve between 20 and 25 years in prison.
Molly and her father have always claimed that Jason was abusive and threatened her life, leading them to appeal their initial convictions. Their sentences were later reduced to manslaughter, and they were released from prison in June 2024.
The documentary, titled “A Deadly American Marriage,” features moving interviews with Jason’s children, Jack and Sarah, who have been living in Ireland with their aunt since their father’s death. The documentary also includes perspectives from Molly and her father as they present their side of the story.
Key elements of the documentary include the 911 call made by Jason’s father-in-law on the night of the incident and an exploration of the events leading up to Jason’s death.
Given its impactful storytelling, “A Deadly American Marriage” has spurred discussions on Facebook’s ‘Netflix Bangers’ group, with viewers expressing strong emotional reactions. One participant commented on the necessity of having tissues at hand, while another extended prayers for Jason’s family, describing the story as heartbreaking.
Filmmakers Jessica Burgess and Jenny Popplewell explained to TUDUM that their approach was to structure the film like a trial, presenting both sides of the argument to enable viewers to form their own opinions on the case.
The documentary also delves into the aftermath of Jason’s death, including the legal battle over the custody of his children—whether they should return to Ireland or remain in the United States.
For those interested in exploring this deeply moving narrative, “A Deadly American Marriage” is now streaming on Netflix.
