Meet Greg Mahle. The Texas-native has saved over 30,000 puppies’ lives. And he has to drive over 3,800 miles a week to do it.
Mahle’s non-profit, Rescue Road Trips, takes dogs from rescue shelters where they would be euthanized if not adopted, and drives them to loving homes. People find the dogs on PetFinder, which are then delivered by Mahle — he regularly drives from Ohio to Texas to New York taking pooches to their new families.
Dedicated to transporting the animals as kindly as possible, the Rescue Road Trips team have scheduled walk and snack breaks for the dogs all along Interstate 35, helped along the way by a team of volunteer “Angels”.
Stray dogs are such a problem in the South that, despite saving up to 120 dogs per week, Rescue Road Trips is having little effect. Northern states have stricter neutering laws for dogs, meaning they have fewer strays.
Mahle, who used to run restaurants, invested his entire life savings into the non-profit organisation. He told WFAA: “The financial situation is week-to-week… you’re doing all this for the love of the dogs.”
“A short while ago, all of these dogs were someone’s trash. They were thrown out. They were abandoned.” And now, because of Mahle, over 30,000 of them are still here.
