Expert explains scientific reasons for improved sleep following sexual activity

An experienced sexologist has divulged why sexual activity can lead to a better night’s rest.

The ‘Sleepmaxxing’ trend might not be the best path to restful sleep, as sexual health specialists suggest that a more effective method exists. This approach doesn’t require mouth tape, red light therapy, or eating an abundance of kiwis.

If you’ve ever drifted off to sleep right after an intimate encounter and awakened feeling incredibly rested, there is scientific reasoning behind it.

Sofie Roos, a Swedish sexologist and relationship therapist, has highlighted the strong link between sexual activity and quality sleep. This connection supports the idea of engaging in intimate moments, either solo or with a partner, to achieve a restful night.

Nonetheless, to ensure this restful outcome, Roos emphasizes the importance of reaching climax.

In a conversation with the Daily Mail, Roos explained that orgasms lead to the release of oxytocin into the bloodstream.

This ‘love hormone’ induces feelings of affection and, crucially for sleep, a sense of calm and safety. These feelings promote restful sleep, she noted.

While you can experience an oxytocin surge from simply sharing intimate moments, achieving orgasm is necessary for maximizing the benefits for restful sleep.

Oxytocin release helps prime the brain for sleep, something that numerous studies have confirmed, according to Roos.

Without reaching orgasm, you may not feel as at ease or ready for sleep, potentially feeling sexually frustrated, which can complicate falling asleep.

“Sexual frustration can mentally hinder falling asleep,” Roos mentioned, “The intense thoughts can be hard to dismiss, leaving you fantasizing in bed instead of winding down.”

In addition to aiding in falling asleep, sexual activity can enhance the overall quality of sleep.

Roos pointed out, “Sex can improve sleep quality indirectly by helping us manage stress better. Less stress leads to more restful sleep.”

Engaging in regular sexual activity can significantly boost overall sleep quality.

“Consistent sexual activity or masturbation contributes positively to sleep as it reduces stress, leading to better sleep quality,” Roos elaborated.

“With regular sex or frequent masturbation, cortisol levels, a stress hormone that can affect sleep quality, decrease.”

Roos compared it to maintaining an active lifestyle for health and fitness gains.

She remarked, “Like with exercise, we benefit most from regular engagement rather than occasional activities.”
