A body language expert has provided insight into why Volodymyr Zelenskyy avoided Donald Trump’s well-known ‘bone-cruncher’ handshake.
Zelenskyy arrived in the United States on Sunday for his meeting with Trump at the White House, following Putin’s recent visit to Alaska for discussions on ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine with the US President.
When meeting Putin, Trump was observed ‘yanking’ on his hand during their handshake, a gesture that body language expert Patti Ann Wood described as a combination of “deference, control, and familiarity” from Trump. She further noted in her comments to Newsweek that Trump’s tactic of keeping the handshake close to his body to pull Putin in was a “display of power.”
However, when Trump greeted Zelenskyy in Washington, he did not use his typical handshake style.
Body language expert Darren Stanton discussed Zelenskyy’s choice of attire with Newsweek, highlighting its significance: “The most significant factor that set the tone for the meeting was Zelenskyy choosing to arrive in a suit. That was the very first thing Trump commented on; he acknowledged the effort, and it clearly influenced his approach.” Instead of his usual combat attire, Zelenskyy appeared in a suit, which, while not a full business suit, was notably more formal than his usual clothing.
Stanton also pointed out the absence of Trump’s ‘bone-crusher’ handshake, stating: “We also didn’t see Trump’s usual ‘bone-crusher’ handshake or the power-play gestures he often uses.”
Reflecting on their previous meeting, Stanton mentioned, “Last time, back in February,” Trump tapped Zelenskyy’s hand during their handshake, a gesture perceived as patronizing, akin to saying ‘good boy’, and placed his hand on his back to assert dominance. None of that was present this time.
“Apart from a couple of small gestures, such as pointing towards doors, Trump avoided the key tactics he often uses to undermine or intimidate,” Stanton added. “It was clear he respected the optics and made no effort to belittle Zelenskyy in front of the media.”
Stanton concluded with, “The handshake was telling: this time it was mutual and measured, without the crushing grip or pulling motion Trump has used before. It reinforced the sense of equality and respect between them.”
The body language during the meeting indicated a less tense atmosphere compared to their previous encounters, and the two leaders even shared a laugh over something that happened in February.
During an earlier visit to the White House this year, Zelenskyy faced criticism for not wearing a suit. Brian Glenn, Chief White House Correspondent for Real America’s Voice, questioned Zelenskyy on his attire, implying it was disrespectful to Trump.
In a now-viral moment, Zelenskyy responded to Glenn’s compliment on his suit by saying, “You’re wearing the same suit. I’ve changed, you have not.”
