Many frequent flyers have their in-flight comfort routines perfected, yet there’s one element that is often overlooked by travelers.
While noise-cancelling headphones, neck pillows, and compression socks are considered essential, health professionals are pointing out a simple item missing from many carry-ons that could significantly improve comfort on long flights: a tennis ball.
Though it might seem unconventional, bringing a tennis ball on board has gained popularity for good reason. Besides its athletic uses, the ball is an effective tool for alleviating muscle tension and enhancing circulation when used during flights.
The concept is straightforward but impactful. During long periods of sitting in cramped conditions, muscles can become stiff and circulation can be impaired.
Osteopath and sleep therapist Tracy Hannigan shared with Metro that a tennis ball can serve as a makeshift massage device to alleviate in-flight discomfort.
Hannigan suggested: “If you wrap it in a small hand towel, shaped like a sausage, you can control it more easily and it will stay in place.”
By rolling the ball gently under your thighs, calves, shoulders, or lower back, it applies mild pressure to tight areas and encourages movement in muscles that tend to stiffen. This method can be discreetly performed in any economy seat, and according to Hannigan, it mitigates some of the physical strain from extended periods of sitting.
She also proposed combining the massage with simple stretches for enhanced effects. She advised: “Turn your chin towards your armpit and use your hand to gently stretch the opposite side of the neck.”
To relieve lower back tension, she recommended crossing one leg over the other and leaning slightly forward, ‘as if you’re trying to touch your elbow to your foot’.
Regular travelers have endorsed this technique on forums like Reddit’s r/TravelHacks subreddit, where user Tmckhar vouched for the tennis ball tip, stating: “Pack a tennis ball/tension ball in your carry-on. Place it at the base of your spine near your tailbone. I do this when driving long periods and it helps with back pain.”
What’s great about a tennis ball is that it’s lightweight, affordable, and easy to pack, making it an ideal tool for maintaining comfort during travel. It requires no special gear or preparation and can be utilized almost anywhere.
So, before you embark on your next journey, consider making room in your carry-on for a single tennis ball. Experts suggest that this small, simple addition could greatly contribute to your comfort and leave you feeling more refreshed upon arrival.
