Experts caution about unsettling new dating trend likely to gain popularity by 2026

From blind dates to Tinder meetups, and from ghosting to love-bombing, the dating scene is ever-evolving, and 2026 promises to bring new trends to the fore. People have always sought out partnerships, whether for a lifetime or just for a fleeting moment, and as the new year approaches, dating specialists are highlighting what the upcoming landscape might look like for those in pursuit of love.

Drawing data from countless daters worldwide, the dating app happn has identified trends that are expected to ‘redefine the dating scene in 2026,’ ranging from ‘sex-care’ to allies. While some of these trends nod to simpler times with a return to ‘genuine gestures’ like home-cooked meals, one trend offers a rather intriguing look into the future.

Artificial intelligence is becoming more integrated into our daily activities, and happn predicts it will soon become a staple in the dating world, with singles using chatbots as ‘a form of emotional training.’ The anticipation isn’t for everyone to partner up with robots, but rather for AI bots to act as ’emotional mirrors, spaces for dialogue, and attentive listeners.’

According to happn, a study revealed that 41 percent of UK participants would be comfortable with their partner having a close AI relationship. In contrast, 43 percent would feel uneasy, and 16 percent would view it as emotional infidelity. This spectrum of opinions highlights potential issues concerning the quality of human connections, as the role of AI in relationships may provoke discussions on conflict, frustration, and reciprocity, which are crucial in any genuine relationship.

Experts noted: “In 2026, AI will assist users in preparing for connection by providing a space to explore emotions before actual interactions. However, there’s a thin line between assistance and reliance: if AI can teach people how to love, they will still need to relearn how to love without it.”

AI and dating trends

Additionally, there is an anticipated rise in ‘sex care,’ where sex is perceived as a form of wellbeing. Daters are expected to focus on listening to their bodies, reconnecting with themselves, and managing stress through sexual practices.

Moreover, the rise of ‘allies’ is expected as more men confront toxic masculinity, along with more open conversations about finances, with 28 percent of survey respondents expressing the importance of dating someone with similar financial values.

Lastly, single individuals will likely reconnect with dating in a more authentic way, moving towards romantic gestures such as flowers and love notes instead of perplexing digital messages.

Claire Rénier, a dating expert at happn, elucidated the trends by saying: “In 2026, within an ever-evolving cultural, technological, and economic landscape, there’s a clear focus on both the past and present. From a heightened emphasis on gender equality to a broader use of AI for dating support, singles are drawing inspiration from various sources, including their own pleasure as a form of wellbeing. While the dating environment is in constant flux, it’s encouraging to see individuals exhaust all avenues in their quest for a partner.”
