The necessity of airplane mode on our devices while flying is a topic that many of us have pondered, and experts have now offered insights.
The airplane mode function is on our phones for a good reason. Some of us use it in settings like cinemas or when we want a break from constant connectivity. But when it comes to using airplane mode on an actual flight, the question arises about its importance.
You might have wondered if it’s essential to switch your device to airplane mode since flight attendants don’t usually inspect every gadget. It’s not unusual to forget to do so, as one Twitter user humorously pointed out: “Didn’t turn on airplane mode. And lived.”
However, experts have shared why it’s a rule to either switch off your devices during takeoff and landing or to put them into airplane mode.
According to specialists from Airalo, while regulations have relaxed over the years, and airlines no longer require full device shutdown, the recommendation remains to use airplane mode for non-communication functions. Most airlines permit smartphone use in airplane mode.
Though it might seem trivial, the experts underscored the presence of ‘scientific evidence’ suggesting that enabling airplane mode is essential for flight safety and the well-being of passengers.
They explained: “When the aircraft is taxiing, scientific evidence proves that there is still a risk of mobile phone signals interfering with aircraft systems and impacting communication between ground control and air traffic.”
They further stated: “Mobile phones and electronic devices radiate electromagnetic signals which can interfere with pilots’ headsets.”
Though a single phone left active might not pose significant risk, the cumulative impact of several passengers doing so could be problematic.
The experts elaborated: “When multiple passengers disobey this rule, the cumulative effect of a large number of mobile phones not in airplane mode, especially when the plane is taking off or landing, remains a serious concern.”
The advice concluded: “Passengers should always stay cautious and keep their device in airplane mode when flying and inside an aircraft.”
