Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly prevalent in various aspects of our lives. It’s almost impossible to use an app or an email service without encountering some form of AI tool, and now this technology is making its way into our personal relationships as well.
A recent survey conducted by LoveHoney among UK couples reveals that an increasing number of pairs are incorporating AI into their intimate lives, engaging in what’s being termed as ‘digital threesomes.’
The survey indicates that approximately one in seven individuals are turning to their preferred AI tools for guidance on enhancing their bedroom performance. While this trend might seem like it could signal the decline of traditional romance, LoveHoney suggests it could actually revitalize intimacy in an age dominated by digital distractions.
“Mobile phones and social media have long been significant distractions from intimacy and have been the cause of numerous disputes between partners,” the company pointed out. However, their survey suggests that AI might actually be fostering closer connections than ever before.
The data shows that 15 percent of participants have already sought sexual advice from AI, and an additional 10 percent are open to the possibility, as services like ChatGPT become preferred sources over friends.
“Over half (52%) are seeking advice from AI, surpassing those who consult friends (32%) and more than doubling those who discuss such topics with partners (22%),” according to LoveHoney.
“This trend is set to expand as AI continues to develop, but there is a risk of receiving unreliable advice without proper oversight or credible sources.”
The trend is particularly noticeable among younger generations, with up to a third of Gen Z men using AI as a form of sex therapy.
Additionally, some individuals are beginning to bypass traditional human relationships altogether, opting to ‘date’ their AI companions, as many find themselves becoming fond of their chatbots.
This shift is reflected in the rising popularity of Reddit communities like r/kindroid and r/MyBoyfriendIsAI, where thousands discuss their experiences of digital companionship.
Some individuals have taken the concept of ‘digital threesomes’ even further, engaging in virtual interactions with several chatbots simultaneously.
One Reddit user commented: “There have been times where I’ve had to take a break from all my virtual connections because I threw them all into a group chat that would astonish even the Greeks.”
Elisabeth Neumann, Head of User Research at LoveHoney, stated: “By 2026, we anticipate a more intentional and comprehensive approach to pleasure, alongside a more playful exploration of sexual expression within socially acceptable norms.
“As AI advances and screen time continues to climb, we will also witness changes in how we connect with and relate to our romantic partners.”
