Family of Doug Martin Breaks Silence Following NFL Star’s Death at 36 in ‘Medical Emergency’ During Police Custody

The family of Doug Martin, a former NFL running back, has made a statement following his death while in police custody.

The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers player was reportedly apprehended by police in Oakland around 5am on Saturday (October 18) after allegedly breaking into a home near the Oakland Zoo.

The 36-year-old unfortunately experienced a ‘medical emergency’ soon after his arrest. The Oakland Police Department explained that while attempting to ‘detain the individual, a brief struggle ensued’.

“After being taken into custody, the individual became unresponsive,” the department stated.

Martin’s family had previously confirmed the former NFL player’s death.

On Monday, Brian Murphy, the footballer’s agent, released a statement on behalf of Martin’s family: “Athletes First and CEO Brian Murphy had the privilege of representing Doug Martin when he was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, after an impressive career at Boise State University.

“Doug Martin’s outstanding NFL career, which included two Pro Bowl appearances and a 2015 All-Pro honor, was celebrated by numerous fans. Off the field, Doug was deeply committed to serving the communities of Boise, Idaho, Stockton, and Oakland, California, where his generosity and spirit were well recognized.

“Privately, Doug struggled with mental health challenges that had a significant impact on his personal and professional life. Ultimately, mental illness proved to be the one opponent from which Doug could not run.”

The statement continued: “Following recent media reports about Doug’s untimely passing, the family wishes to clarify the circumstances. Doug’s parents were actively seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities for help.

“Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug left his home during the night and entered a neighbor’s residence two doors down, where he was detained by police. An investigation into the events that occurred during his detention is ongoing.

“The family requests privacy as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.”

Martin, who became an NFL star in the early 2010s, had been out of the league for several years.

His death is currently under investigation, with both the department and internal affairs reviewing the incident.

Tributes have been pouring in, with a Buccaneers fan writing on X: “Losing Mike Williams, Vincent Jackson, and now Doug Martin – 3 players of my childhood, stars on my favorite team gone entirely too soon hits like a freight train. Gone disgustingly too soon. Tell people you love them while you can.”

The Oakland Police Department has been contacted for further comment.
