Family of pop star Selena react after woman who killed her receives prison sentence update

As the 30-year mark of Selena’s tragic passing approaches, the individual responsible for her death has been denied a chance for early release.

Yolanda Saldívar, who was found guilty of murdering the beloved singer, has been incarcerated since her conviction for first-degree murder.

At the time of her untimely death in 1995, Selena was merely 23 years old. It is reported that on the day of her murder, she confronted Saldívar over allegations of embezzling $30,000 from a fan organization she managed.

During the trial, Saldívar’s defense claimed the shooting was accidental. However, the jury remained unconvinced, resulting in a life sentence for Saldívar, now 64.

After nearly three decades, Saldívar was eligible for parole, but her request has been rejected.

According to Texas Department of Criminal Justice records cited by ABC 6, “After a thorough consideration of all available information, which included any confidential interviews conducted, it was the parole panel’s determination to deny parole to Yolanda Saldivar and set her next parole review for March 2030.

“The reason provided by the panel for denial was the Nature of the Offense: The record indicates that the instant offense has elements of brutality, violence, assaultive behavior or conscious selection of victim’s vulnerability indicating a conscious disregard for the lives, safety, or property of others, such that the offender poses a continuing threat to public safety.”

Following the decision to keep Saldívar incarcerated, Selena’s family expressed their feelings in a statement.

“Today, we are grateful that the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has chosen to deny parole for Yolanda Saldívar,” a post shared to Selena’s official Instagram page began.

“While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world far too soon.”

They continued, stating: “Selena’s legacy is one of love, music, and inspiration. She lived with joy, gave selflessly, and continues to uplift generations with her voice and spirit.

“As her family and loved ones, we remain committed to preserving her memory and ensuring that her story is honored with the dignity and respect it deserves.”

Selena’s family members also extended their gratitude to her supporters for their unwavering encouragement.

“Your love has been a source of strength and healing,” they said.

“We will continue to celebrate Selena’s life — not the tragedy that took her from us — and we ask that all who cherish her do the same.”
