Family of teen charged over teacher’s death after ‘prank’ went wrong speak out

The relatives of a teen accused of striking his teacher with a car while trying to pull off a prank have released a statement.

Authorities say five students went to a teacher’s home in Gainesville to toilet-paper the property, but the situation escalated.

Jason Hughes, a math teacher and golf coach, later died as a result of what happened.

Investigators allege that while the North Hall High School students were at the residence in Hall County, Georgia, Hughes came outside, tripped, and fell into the roadway. As one of the cars attempted to leave, he was run over.

The driver has been identified as 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace.

Reports say Wallace and the others remained at the scene and tried to help Hughes until emergency personnel arrived.

Wallace’s family later shared a message expressing grief and regret over the death.

“We are a family in deep remorse and grieving over such a tremendous loss in our North Hall community. Jason Hughes meant the world to our son, Jayden

“He took the time to invest in Jay and poured his love into him, making a lasting impact. Along with the rest of our family, Jay expresses his deepest sorrow and sincerest apology to the Hughes family.”

“I pledge to live out the remainder of my life in a manner that honors the memory of Coach Hughes by exemplifying Christ. He will never be forgotten.”

Wallace was arrested at the scene, according to reports, along with four other students.

They were identified as Elijah Tate Owens, 18, Aiden Hucks, 18, Ana Katherine Luque, 18, and Ariana Cruz, 18.

Hughes’ wife, Laura, has previously spoken about the case and urged that the teens not face the charges.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students. This would be counter to Jason’s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.”

In the wake of the incident, messages remembering Hughes have poured in online.

“Our hearts are broken. Jason Hughes was a loving husband, a devoted father, a passionate teacher, mentor, and coach who was loved and respected by students and colleagues.

“He gave so much to so many in numerous ways. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife and family. We ask that the media and the public respect their privacy as they grieve this incredible loss.”
