Fans are just now spotting detail in Jim Carrey’s The Grinch that ‘spoils the film forever’

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is a beloved holiday film, but some viewers are claiming it’s been ‘ruined’ after a TikTok user pointed out a mistake in the editing.

In November 2000, director Ron Howard brought to life Dr. Seuss’ famous grumpy, green character, the Grinch, through a live-action adaptation.

Despite mixed reviews from critics, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” has remained a festive classic for over 20 years and earned Jim Carrey a Golden Globe nomination.

The plot, inspired by Dr. Seuss’ 1957 book of the same name, tells the tale of the Grinch learning the value of kindness and that redemption is always possible.

Featuring Carrey as the Grinch, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” also marked the debut of actress Taylor Momson for many audiences.

Now 31, Momson played the role of Cindy Lou Who in the holiday film before joining the “Spy Kids” franchise and the “Gossip Girl” series.

Even though the film has stood the test of time, some fans are upset, claiming that a TikTok user named @redcobweb has ‘ruined’ it for them.

In December 2022, the user shared a scene from the movie, stating that they could no longer enjoy the holiday classic due to a noticeable continuity error.

“So every time I watch The Grinch I notice this one little mistake they made,” they began.

“They forget to either put [The Grinch’s] contacts in or forgot to edit them in afterwards.”

Fans of the 2000 film will recognize that the Grinch typically has greenish-yellow eyes with black irises.

However, during a brief scene where Carrey’s character is in lederhosen, his eyes appear brown.

“And so just Jim Carrey’s brown eyes are just there,” the TikToker explained.

“Those are his brown eyes and then in the next scene, they’re back[to green].”

The TikTok video, which has been circulating again, has gathered over 1700 comments from fellow fans who are dismayed by the oversight.

One commenter noted: “Okay but why is his normal eyes so much more unsettling than the contacts…? Just me.”

“The Grinch is my comfort movie I’ve watched it a million times, even last night, and I have NEVER noticed this,” added another.

A third person noted: “I’m surprised this isn’t common knowledge at this point but Jim’s eyes got incredibly irritated with the contacts so they did have to edit it. But there are more scenes than just this one that show his normal eyes they only focused on the up close scenes.”

Someone else wrote: “You ruined it for me,” while another said: “Somehow, it’s way more disturbing with Jim eyes.”

It’s not uncommon for minor editing mistakes to slip through in post-production.

A Starbucks cup made an unexpected appearance in the final season of “Game of Thrones,” which HBO later confirmed was digitally removed.

“Home Alone” fans also once thought there was a significant continuity error during the scene where Kevin McCallister (played by Macaulay Culkin) orders pizza.

He manages to call in an order despite his parents being unreachable due to downed phone lines.

However, this plot detail has since been clarified by a Reddit user and an AT&T representative.

“I always assumed the tree actually severed the main trunk line to the whole town, but local calls within the same exchange still worked,” a Reddit user suggested.

AT&T responded to Huff Post: “Everything is changing now because of all this phone capability is moving into the cloud, but in 1990, that was absolutely a plausible scenario.”

Another error occurs when Kevin’s older cousin Heather (Kristin Minter) is seen rushing up the stairs before she appears climbing the same steps again moments later.
