Prepare yourself for an emotional rollercoaster after watching Andrew Garfield’s touching interaction with Elmo from Sesame Street.
During a promotional visit for his new film, We Live in Time, Garfield made an appearance on Sesame Street to discuss the important topics of emotional health and dealing with grief with Elmo.
Elmo and Garfield’s conversation, which is gaining attention on Twitter, kicks off with Elmo asking Garfield about his current feelings.
“I’m just thinking about my mom today,” the actor from Spider-Man confesses. “She passed away not too long ago and you know, I just miss her a lot.” Garfield’s mother, Lynn, succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 2019.
Garfield then acknowledges that it’s ‘actually kind of okay to miss somebody.’
“You know, that sadness is kind of a gift,” he elaborates. “Kind of a lovely thing to feel in a way, because it means that you really loved somebody when you miss them.
“And when I miss someone, when I miss my mom, I remember all the cuddles I used to get from her. All the hugs I used to get from her.
“It makes me feel close to her when I miss her, in a strange sort of way,” he adds. “So, I’m happy to have all the memories of my mom and all the joy she brought me.”
“And the joy she brought my brother, and my dad, everyone she ever met, everyone around her. So when I miss her, I remember it’s because she made me so happy.
“So I can celebrate her and I can miss her at the same time,” Garfield concludes.
If you weren’t already moved, Elmo offers comfort to Garfield and thanks him for his openness, saying, “Elmo wants to know how people are doing and Elmo is very happy that you shared that with him.
“And you know what? Elmo is going to think about and celebrate your mummy, too,” Elmo adds, bringing viewers to tears.
Ending their heartfelt exchange, Elmo turns to the camera, reminding viewers to celebrate the special people in their lives whom they may have lost.
Twitter users were visibly moved by Elmo and Garfield’s dialogue, with one person tweeting, “I am experiencing a technical issue with my screens as they are displaying a blurry image. I am unclear about the situation.”
Another shared the solace they found in the interaction, commenting, “Who knew I needed this? It was just the anniversary of losing my dad a few days ago and man do I miss him. Thank you for sharing this.”
Some users highlighted the significance of Sesame Street addressing difficult topics like grief, with one remarking, “This is such a sweet and tender message of what it’s like to miss people, endure loss and explain grief. I am and will forever be a fan of Sesame Street.”
Garfield stars alongside Florence Pugh in We Live in Time, which is currently showing in theaters.
