Father issues urgent alert after son, 12, succumbs to brain-eating amoeba contracted at well-known swimming location

The tragic death of a young boy in South Carolina has prompted a grieving father to issue a stark warning. The family of 12-year-old Jaysen Carr is mourning his loss after he contracted a fatal brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, while swimming at Lake Murray.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes Naegleria fowleri as an ameba that thrives in warm freshwater environments.

In a statement released by the family’s attorney, Tyler Bailey, the family expressed their deep sorrow and gratitude for the community’s support: “Jaysen’s family is grieving this unthinkable loss, but they are also grateful at the outpouring of love and support they have received from the community.

“The family has many questions about how and why Jaysen died and wants to do everything in their power to ensure this doesn’t happen to another family.”

Jaysen’s father, Clarence Carr, has stressed the need to raise awareness about this deadly infection. He told the Associated Press, “I can’t believe we don’t have our son. The result of him being a child was losing his life. That does not sit well. And I am terrified it will happen to someone else.”

Clarence emphasized, “My son lost his life swimming. We assumed it was safe.”

This tragic incident has highlighted a gap in legislation, as South Carolina, like many other states, lacks laws requiring the public disclosure of deaths or infections caused by the amoeba.

Jaysen’s health deteriorated rapidly after his swim over the July Fourth weekend. Typically, after exposure, the infected person may fall into a coma and die within one to 18 days.

When Jaysen returned home, he complained of a headache and feeling unwell. His condition worsened, leading to hospitalization, but sadly, he passed away on July 18.

In the wake of this tragedy, the family has created a GoFundMe page to solicit donations and support from the community.

The GoFundMe page states: “The Carr family is grieving the unimaginable loss of their beloved son, Jaysen. He was an incredible son, a devoted brother, and a true friend to everyone who knew him. His kind heart and bright spirit left a lasting impact on everyone he met.

“Jaysen bravely faced a tough medical battle, and while his strength inspired so many, the journey has left the Carr family with numerous unexpected expenses. As they navigate this heartbreaking loss, we want to come together to help ease their burden.

“Please consider donating to support the Carr family during this devastating time. Your generosity will help cover expenses and give them space to grieve without the added weight of financial stress. Every donation, share, and prayer means the world.”

To date, $55,000 of the $70,000 target has been raised.
