Father Misinterprets Signs as Acid Reflux Before Receiving Heartbreaking Diagnosis

In the early months of 2024, a father of two began to suffer from heartburn and indigestion, which doctors initially attributed to acid reflux.

Zack Van Aarde, aged 41, consulted his GP and was prescribed medication aimed at treating acid reflux.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, acid reflux occurs when ‘stomach acid rises into your esophagus,’ potentially leading to heartburn, although it’s not typically a serious condition.

In Zack’s situation, however, the seriousness of his condition became apparent when he collapsed on the stairs and started vomiting blood in July 2025.

Zack’s wife, Jess, woke up to the commotion and quickly got him to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, UK, for additional examinations.

Initially, doctors believed he might have a stomach ulcer, but further tests revealed a more severe diagnosis.

An endoscopy, which involves inserting a camera down the throat, revealed that Zack had stage four esophagus cancer.

Zack, who works as an account executive at a cyber security company, expressed, “It’s been a rollercoaster.

“I always kept myself fit and healthy as a young dad.”

“It came as a massive shock but we’re doing everything we can to give myself the best chance.”

Recalling the distressing events of July, Jess stated: “I woke-up at 5am and heard heavy breathing and someone collapse.

“I rushed out and discovered Zack on the floor, having vomited blood.”

“We didn’t want to scare the kids, so quickly got him in the room and called an ambulance.”

“He’d lost so much blood he was struggling to stand or sit up.”

Following the diagnosis, Zack commenced chemotherapy sessions, scheduled every two weeks, along with regular scans and blood tests to monitor the 6cm tumor and determine if surgery could be viable.

Zack and Jess have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the family’s financial needs during Zack’s inability to work.

The raised funds are also intended for ‘additional therapies’ outside of the NHS offerings, which the family believes may assist in Zack’s recovery alongside chemotherapy.

It is important to emphasize that medical professionals recommend that cancer patients consult with healthcare providers before exploring alternative therapies.

To support the fundraising, Zack has committed to running ‘one mile’ for every £10 ($13.40) collected on his GoFundMe page.

“Chemotherapy kills all the cells – good and bad ones,” Zack explained.

He continued, “To give my cells the best chance of rejuvenating more quickly, we’ve been researching additional therapies.”

“I’ve tried hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers, which increase oxygen to the body, IV drips with high doses of vitamin C to boost the immune system, and red light therapy.”

“I’m determined to do whatever I can to give me the best chance for my family.”
