Father-of-two named as victim of Rottnest Island Shark Attack as wife pays heartbreaking tribute

The man killed in Saturday’s shark attack at Rottnest Island has been identified as Steven Mattaboni, a 38-year-old Perth father of two. Tributes from family and friends describe someone deeply committed to his loved ones and to the ocean.

Known to mates as “Mattas,” Mattaboni worked as a surveyor and was spearfishing at Horseshoe Reef on Saturday morning when he was attacked by a great white shark reported to be about five metres long. The shark was seen roughly 80 metres offshore.

Friends who were with him pulled him from the water and began CPR while rushing back toward Geordie Bay jetty.

Paramedics and a rescue helicopter were waiting at the jetty, but despite sustained efforts, Mattaboni could not be revived.

In a statement released on Sunday, his wife Shirene — a clinical nurse specialist — said her husband “lived and breathed the ocean.”

“Our hearts are irrevocably broken by the loss of Steven,” she said. “An avid fisherman and spear-fisherman, who lived and breathed the ocean, he was always in tune with the sea. He was fiercely loyal, endlessly generous, and the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back.”

She said the family had lost “a one-of-a-kind gentleman,” and that their two daughters had lost their father far too soon. One daughter is due to turn three next month, while the other is just four months old.

Further information will be reported as it becomes available.

Kingsley Football Club in Perth’s north, where Mattaboni previously played in a premiership side, also shared a tribute online, describing him as a standout presence among teammates and friends.

“Mattas was one of the most genuine people you could meet,” the club said.

“He had a smile and presence that could light up a room, and he will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our thoughts and love are with his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time, especially his wife Shirene and their two young daughters.”
