Every summer, photographers in Japan aren’t thinking about sunbathing and beach holidays; it’s the only time of year they can capture truly stunning images of fireflies.
In May and June, the keen snappers set off to remote locations across Japan to capture the magical light show put on every evening by the fireflies.
Using long exposures and composites of up to 200 frames, the photographers are able to capture the stunning images making it seem as if thousands of fireflies have taken over the world.
As fireflies only live for around 10 days and are extremely sensitive to light pollution, it’s no easy task even finding the little bugs, let alone capturing the perfect snapshot.
But it’s definitely worth it.
These images are from the 2016 summer season, taken by some of the most skilled photographers in Japan.
