First explosive trailer released for live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake

The trailer for the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon has been released, prompting fans to share their thoughts on social media.

Live-action remakes of beloved animated classics come with certain risks. Thus, enthusiasts of the 2010 film, loosely inspired by Cressida Cowell’s book series, have been eagerly anticipating updates on the forthcoming release.

Fortunately, fans no longer have to wait, with the live-action remake’s first look unveiled today (November 19).

The new fantasy film is both written and directed by Dean DeBlois, who also serves as a co-producer alongside Marc Platt and Adam Siegel.

In the trailer, Mason Thames stars as Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, and it quickly tugs at the heartstrings when Hiccup encounters a reimagined version of Toothless—the dragon we all adored from the animated film.

With a captivating score and breathtaking scenery, could we be witnessing the start of another successful adaptation?

Fans of the original have swiftly taken to social media to express their excitement.

One Twitter user remarked: “Wait this actually looks really good.”

Another shared: “It looks absolutely stunning, I genuinely can’t wait for this.”

A third commented: “I’m so seated.”

A fourth wrote: “It looks AMAZING!! Can’t wait for this!!!”

Someone else added: “My favorite animated trilogy is coming to life!!”

And a sixth concluded: “This is gonna be so underrated. Gonna be Disney’s BEST life action movie.”

Joining Mason Thames in the cast are Nico Parker as Astrid Hofferson, Nick Frost as the blacksmith Gobber the Belch, Julian Dennison as Fishlegs Ingerman, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout Jorgenson, Bronwyn James as Ruffnut Thorston, and Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut Thorston.

Gerard Butler, known for voicing Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s father in the animated films, reprises his role in the live-action version as well.

The visual effects for the film are provided by Framestore, with Christian Manz serving as the production VFX supervisor.

The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on June 13, 2025, so be on the lookout for more trailers in the meantime.

The big question remains whether DreamWorks will produce live-action versions not only of the first film but of the entire trilogy—time will tell.
