Hailing from Venezuela, Chirinos was a decorated Olympian, having secured medals in five different Olympic Games: Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and London 2012.
She also found significant success in Central America, clinching two gold medals at the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games, and earning multiple silver medals at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo in 2003.
Reports indicate that Chirinos was reported missing on Monday (August 12) after she did not show up for work.
Law enforcement discovered her body in her Las Vegas apartment four days later.
According to Mail Online, it is believed that the 50-year-old retired athlete died from asphyxiation. A post-mortem examination reportedly revealed food remnants in her windpipe, suggesting she choked on her food.
It is thought that she passed away on Sunday, August 11, a day before being reported missing.
However, her exact cause of death has yet to be confirmed by the police.
Following her untimely death, the Venezuelan Olympic Committee released a statement.
“The COV Board of Directors regrets the death of Daniela Larreal,” it read. “With an outstanding career in track cycling, she managed to represent us with honour in five Olympic Games, accumulate four Olympic diplomas and triumphs that always filled us with great pride.”
Online tributes have been pouring in for the late Olympic cyclist.
One Twitter user wrote: “An immense loss for Venezuela and for all those who dream of a future of freedom. Daniela Larreal Chirinos not only shined in sport, but also in her fight for a free homeland.
“Her legacy of courage and commitment to her country will continue to inspire many. Rest in peace, champion, your voice and your spirit will continue to be present in the fight for a better tomorrow.”
Another person expressed on her Instagram page: “Rest in peace Daniela. You were always a warrior, excellent athlete.”
One more added: “You were an example and one of great admiration. You remain in our hearts. Strength for your family and your loved ones.”
Someone else commented: “My first Venezuelan superhero in the Olympics. Rest in Peace Daniela. You left us too young.”
