Flappy Bird Returns Over a Decade After Its Controversial Shutdown

Ensure you have enough storage on your phone because an addictively simple game is making a notable comeback.

Games are released frequently, with choices ranging from free-to-play, live service, to major AAA titles.

In 2014, the gaming scene was quite different. A decade is a significant period in the industry, and a game that once captivated the world is set for a surprising return.

Obviously, we’re talking about Flappy Bird.

The game’s simplicity was astounding, making one wonder why no one had created something similar before. Perhaps they did, but none gained the same level of fame.

Upon its release, almost every phone owner downloaded it to test how far they could go. People even shared their high scores on Facebook—a reminder of the times when people posted nearly everything on the platform.

The game’s concept was straightforward yet captivating: players controlled a bird named Faby, guiding it through pairs of pipes with randomly placed gaps.

Interestingly, it used the pipe asset from the classic Mario games, indicating it didn’t have substantial backing.

It appeared to be the creation of a single individual, Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen.

Despite its soaring popularity, Nguyen made the surprising decision to delete the game.

He alerted fans via Twitter that Flappy Bird would be removed just nine months after its debut.

“I am sorry Flappy Bird users, 22 hours from now, I will take Flappy Bird down. I cannot take this anymore,” Nguyen tweeted in February 2014.

For disappointed fans, there is good news. The game is reportedly returning in 2025, although Nguyen will not be involved.

Reports suggest that the game aims for a late October 2025 release across various platforms, including web browsers, iOS, and Android.

A group called ‘The Flappy Bird Foundation,’ described as ‘a new team of passionate fans committed to sharing the game with the world,’ is behind the revival.

This group claims to have obtained the official Flappy Bird trademark from Gametech Holdings LLC and has ambitious plans for the game’s release. These include new game modes, characters, progression systems, and massive multiplayer challenges.
