Kamal Padlowski was sentenced to life in prison Monday for the 2024 Memorial Day Weekend murder of his drinking buddy at a Florida marina.
Hillsborough County Judge Michelle Sisco handed down the lifetime sentence without possibility of parole to Padlowski, 52, in Tampa, Fla. The convicted murderer was found guilty of premeditated first-degree murder in July for killing Melvin Jimenez, 47, at the Little Harbor Marina in Ruskin.

The pair had met earlier on May 25, 2024, at the tiki-themed Sunset Bar and Grill near the marina before Jimenez was invited back to Padlowski’s sailboat. They continued drinking on the vessel with Padlowski’s fiancée before a daytime brawl erupted and spilled onto the dock.
The entire fatal encounter was captured on camera. Footage showed Padlowski punching Jimenez before grabbing his throat, then shoving him onto the fiberglass dock where Jimenez fell backward and struck his head. Padlowski then dragged his motionless victim by the ankles and threw him into the water.
“I think I just killed my best friend,” Padlowski said during the incident, according to court testimony reported by Court TV.

Instead of helping Jimenez out of the water, Padlowski returned to his boat and armed himself with two kitchen knives until police arrived. During his trial, Padlowski claimed he thought Jimenez was still alive.
“I thought he was still alive and swimming somewhere, either to get out or to come back and reengage,” Padlowski said during his trial, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Padlowski claimed self-defense, saying his guest had become aggressive and started acting like he owned the boat. He testified that Jimenez had threatened to kill him and rape his fiancée as the altercation grew violent. Jimenez’s blood alcohol level was measured at.26, over three times the legal limit. Padlowski claimed to have consumed “two hard iced teas and maybe a shot or two of vodka,” though his own blood alcohol levels were not revealed.
Prosecutors argued there was no self-defense because Padlowski was not facing an imminent threat. During sentencing Monday, Judge Sisco deplored Padlowski’s actions and his complete lack of remorse throughout the proceedings.
“From the moment I first saw the video, I just couldn’t even believe it was real, what I was watching,” Sisco said Monday. “I couldn’t believe there’d be such a lack of sympathy for another human being.”
Jimenez’s stepdaughter, Kim Springer, delivered an emotional victim impact statement in court during the sentencing.
“Mel was my dad, because he showed up for me every day,” Springer cried. “He chose us and we chose him. He became the first man I ever trusted completely. He became my safe space, my protector and the person who taught me that not everyone would hurt me.”
Padlowski’s attorney, Alex Stavrou, revealed his intention to appeal the verdict following the sentencing. Stavrou pointed to Judge Sisco’s own comments during the proceeding, where she said Padlowski would have only been found guilty of manslaughter if Jimenez died from the fall onto the dock rather than from being dumped into the water.
“We accept the jury’s verdict, we accept the process, but there are occasions — which is why we have appellate courts — when those rulings are not necessarily correct based on how they’re presented or based on the evidence,” Stavrou told the Tampa Bay Times.
In the viral moment that led to the trial, surveillance footage captured Padlowski’s chillingly casual conduct after the killing. After throwing Jimenez’s body into the water, he kicked his victim’s shoes in behind him and walked away without attempting to render aid or call for help. The video showed him retrieving the kitchen knives and waiting for authorities while Jimenez remained in the water. The footage became central to the prosecution’s case and was played repeatedly during the trial, with jurors citing Padlowski’s complete indifference as evidence of premeditation.
Padlowski will serve his life sentence in the Florida State Prison system. His attorney’s appeal will be filed in the coming weeks.
