Adonis Leyva, 34, is back behind bars in Orlando after a pipe-wielding rampage through fast-food shops and a bank.
The arrest came barely four weeks after his release from prison for killing a swan at Lake Eola, a downtown park where witnesses saw him carrying the dead bird last August. Leyva had served just under a year on animal cruelty charges after pleading no contest.
Leyva’s latest spree began Monday at an Arby’s in Orlando, where he smashed a window with a metal pipe and terrified a female employee, according to an online arrest warrant. He then marched next door and bashed a Dunkin’ Donuts sign before hurling the pipe at cars along busy East Colonial Drive.
Police finally arrested him at a Wawa in the area. The following day, employees at a nearby PNC Bank discovered an ATM damaged, with surveillance footage linking the destruction to the same Monday rampage. Prosecutors tacked on a second felony charge Tuesday.
Leyva now faces two third-degree felony criminal mischief charges and is being held on $6,000 bond, jail records show.
The swan killing that preceded his brief freedom drew local outrage last year. In late August, Leyva attacked the bird at Lake Eola, a popular spot where the swans are a fixture. When a horrified witness confronted him, he offered a blunt explanation.
“I killed it for my food,” he told the witness, according to police accounts. Officers who responded and cuffed him got the same rationale. “I was hungry, so I hunted,” he said.
Despite the bizarre nature of the crime, Leyva was found fit to stand trial following a mental competency evaluation. The outcome left some Orlando residents unsettled by his eventual release.
“I don’t think anybody that does cruelty or has harming in their hearts should be free,” local resident Elizabeth Guerrero told News 6. “Nobody would feel safe.”
Leyva’s case now returns to the Orange County court system as he remains in custody on the new felony counts.
