Jimmy Carter, the oldest former US president, celebrated his 98th birthday on Saturday.
According to a spokeswoman for The Carter Center, Carter quietly celebrated at home with his family. The Carter Center will conduct virtual activities to commemorate the former president’s birthday and legacy. The public is invited to send him a virtual birthday greeting through his organization.
After the death of George H. W. Bush in late 2018, Carter became the oldest living US president in history. Due to the coronavirus epidemic, he has kept a low public profile in recent years. Still, he has continued to speak out against threats to democracy worldwide, his lifelong cause.
Before entering politics, he worked as a peanut farmer and a US Navy lieutenant before becoming governor of Georgia and President of the United States from 1977 to 1981.
The previous Democratic president is well-known for his support for human rights. His role in negotiating the Camp David Accords in 1978 with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin is essential to his reputation.
Following his presidency, Carter shifted his focus to human rights, co-founding The Carter Center with his wife, Rosalynn, to foster global peace and health. Over the years, the Carter Center has fought to improve democracy by monitoring international elections and lowering sickness in impoverished nations. Carter has been a Habitat for Humanity volunteer for many years.
