Former “Swan” contestant Kari Bravata says she nearly died during filming of the extreme makeover series.
Bravata, who competed on Fox’s controversial 2004 reality show, said that she failed to wake from anesthesia after plastic surgery and her lungs filled with fluid, forcing her onto oxygen. The camera crew was removed from her room when her condition deteriorated, she alleged, and she was never given full details of what occurred. “It’s scary that I’ll probably never know,” she said.
The two-season series, which ran from April to December 2004, subjected women to extensive cosmetic procedures while framing them as “ugly ducklings” transforming into “swans.” Contestants underwent as many as fifteen surgeries in a single session, according to Erin Lee Carr, director of the new Hulu documentary “The Swan: Behind the Mirror,” which premieres September 29.
Carr said that she considers the program “one of the most sadistic reality shows of all time.” The “swans” were pushed to slim down at the gym while still in bandages, then debuted their new appearances on television just three months later. The process culminated in a televised beauty pageant that contestants were not told about beforehand.
Kristy Garza, 45, another former participant, said that she remains unable to identify all the procedures performed on her. “I know that they tweaked my eyes, I know I had a little bit of fat transfer here and there – but I couldn’t even tell you the exact surgeries I had,” she said.
Garza described the aftercare as “mediocre,” with contestants forced to rely on each other for basic recovery needs. Carr noted that roommates had to change linens and fetch ice packs for one another. Garza alleged that no one quit because producers threatened participants with financial liability for their surgeries. “I was scared to death,” she admitted. “I think that that was the general consensus among most of us. We felt trapped.”
The dental work proved particularly damaging for Garza. She said that improper veneers caused the underlying teeth to rot, resulting in six extractions in the years since filming. “I had so many problems with my teeth – cracks, breaks. Whatever they did to my gums was very detrimental,” she said.
Other contestants reported serious complications they had to cover out of pocket, including ruptured breast implants. Garza said the former participants commiserate about their experiences, making jokes to cope with what she called “extreme” lasting effects.
Despite the trauma, neither woman expresses regret. Garza refuses “to be a victim,” and Bravata stated she would participate again. “I know that probably sounds crazy. But, it was an experience. It was an adventure. We learned from it,” Bravata said. Both report satisfaction with their surgical outcomes, with Bravata noting, “I’m happy – aside from the teeth.”
The show drew nine million viewers at its peak and was created by Nely Galán, who declined to appear in Carr’s documentary. Carr said she views “The Swan” as a “harbinger” of contemporary beauty culture, where lip filler and weight-loss drugs like Ozempic have become commonplace. “We as a society collectively are trying to figure out why we can’t look natural,” she said.
The original series operated on what Bravata described as a brutal premise: “You’re ugly, and we’re gonna make you pretty – but then, we’re gonna make you compete until you’re still good enough.” Contestants received therapy ostensibly to develop “inner beauty,” but the psychological support ended when production wrapped, leaving them to manage ongoing medical issues without follow-up assistance.
“The Swan: Behind the Mirror” premieres September 29 on Hulu.
