Phil Dunster has broken his silence on his surprise return to “Ted Lasso.”
The actor, 34, who played cocky striker Jamie Tartt in the show’s first three seasons, resurfaced in Season 4’s sixth episode, which dropped Wednesday on Apple TV. His appearance came after months of speculation, fueled by his own cagey answers and his presence at the season premiere.
Dunster had played it close to the vest when asked directly about coming back. In a March interview, he said simply, “maybe,” He added that he thought Season 4 would be “brilliant. I really do. And it’s got plenty of the stuff that people love about the show and will come back wanting.”
The episode finds Jamie at a splashy New Year’s Eve party in Barcelona, where he now plays. Keely (Juno Temple) and Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) run into Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), who grumbles that he’s only there “to watch a man make an absolute tit of himself.”
The man in question is Jamie, launching his own vodka brand, “Apple Tartt Vodka.” He takes the stage to cheers, sporting bleached hair and surrounded by garish art depicting himself in the Garden of Eden. His eyes in the painting are noticeably, comically close together.
Jamie is appalled by the artwork. He says he looks like a “two-eyed cyclops,” then demands, “What the f–k have they done to my face?”
The reunion gives Jamie and Roy a chance to reconnect. The former rivals — they fought over Keely in earlier seasons — have become close friends, and Jamie calls Roy “the brother I never had.”
Things take a physical turn when the DJ drops House of Pain’s 1992 hit “Jump Around.” Jamie and Roy start bouncing together until Roy collapses, landing hard on his knee. Jamie carries him out as Roy yells, “Put me down, f–k, this is humiliating!”
The night ends with Jamie, Keely and Rebecca at the hospital, standing by Roy’s bedside as he goes loopy on pain medication.
Dunster’s return marks a notable exception among the original cast. Season 4 follows Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) coaching a women’s team after a three-year hiatus, and several male players didn’t come back, including Jamie’s former teammate Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernandez). Dunster had not been announced in the returning cast.
The actor has kept ties to the production through his wife, filmmaker Ellie Heydon, who directed Season 4’s fourth and fifth episodes. During an April appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Dunster explained, “I’m riding shotgun on [my wife’s] experience of it because I just want to stay near to it.”
He continued that the show “changed my life,” and now his wife has “her own experience with it.”
The Jamie-Roy dynamic has evolved significantly since their early antagonism. Their rivalry over Keely softened into genuine friendship by the end of Season 3, and their drunken reunion in Barcelona leans heavily into that warmth — even as Roy’s body fails him mid-celebration.
Dunster has been busy outside the “Ted Lasso” universe as well. He appeared in the HBO comedy “Rooster” alongside Steve Carell.
The sixth episode’s New Year’s Eve setting allowed for multiple reunions at once, with Keely and Rebecca’s surprise at seeing Roy paralleling the audience’s surprise at seeing Jamie. The vodka launch’s absurd artwork — Jamie’s complaints about his painted face notwithstanding — frames his return with the same self-mocking humor that defined his earlier appearances.
