A fruit vendor originally from Syria and residing in Australia has been praised for his courageous actions during a recent violent episode in the country. On December 14, when two armed men started shooting at the crowds at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, Ahmed al-Ahmed did not hesitate to act.

Ahmed managed to tackle and disarm one of the attackers, a brave action that many believe prevented further loss of life.

The attack resulted in 15 casualties, including one of the suspects, 50-year-old Sajid Akram.

Ahmed, in his attempt to neutralize one of the gunmen, suffered two gunshot wounds and is currently receiving medical care.

A video documenting Ahmed’s bravery went viral, leading to a fundraiser that has amassed $2,537,062 through over 42,000 donations.

Ahmed’s lawyer, Sam Issa, provided the Australian Broadcast Corporation (ABC) with updates on the 43-year-old’s condition, stating that Ahmed recently underwent a ‘very complex operation’ due to ‘nerve damage’ and is currently in significant discomfort. He also mentioned that Ahmed is preparing for another eight-hour procedure.

On December 16, Ahmed conveyed his first message from the hospital.

Türkiye’s public broadcaster, TRT World, shared a video of Ahmed in the hospital extending prayers to those offering support.

In Arabic, he expressed [translated]: “I appreciate the efforts of everyone. May Allah reward you and grant you wellbeing. God willing, we will return to you with joy. Thank you for your efforts.”

He further stated: “I went through a very difficult phase, only Allah knows it … I ask my mother, the apple of my eye, to pray for me.”

Ahmed has been visited by several prominent figures, including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who commended him with the words, ‘You’re very strong. Your heart is strong. Your courage is inspiring.’

New South Wales Premier Chris Minn also visited and remarked: “It’s the most unbelievable scene I’ve ever seen.”

He continued: “A man walking up to a gunman who had fired on the community and single-handedly disarming him, putting his own life at risk to save the lives of countless other people.”

He concluded by affirming that Ahmed’s actions have undeniably saved many lives, describing him as a true hero.
