Gastroenterologist unveils essential nutrient for enhancing immunity

One nutrient might be the answer to achieving optimal gut health, but it’s not time to rush out for supplements just yet.

If you’re enjoying good gut health, congratulations—you are among the fortunate few.

Nowadays, it seems that everyone, including friends and family, is experiencing gut issues. However, there’s one vital nutrient that might provide relief—though seeing is believing.

Dr. Joseph Salhab, known as @thestomachdoc on TikTok, is a gastroenterologist specializing in the gut, liver, and pancreas. He uses his social media to promote digestive health insights.

In a recent video, Dr. Salhab discussed a nutrient that could ‘boost your gut and liver health.’

As a ‘board-certified gastroenterologist,’ Dr. Salhab mentions that research indicates individuals who ‘consistently meet their dietary requirements’ for a specific vitamin, crucial for gut and liver health, tend to have lower rates of certain digestive diseases and a reduced risk of fatty liver disease, which is the ‘leading cause of liver disease globally.’

The essential vitamin? Vitamin E.

Referring to a study in The American Journal of Gastroenterology, Dr. Salhab displayed a screenshot of the research titled: “Dietary Vitamin E Intake is Associated with a Reduced Risk of Developing Digestive Diseases and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.”

Vitamin E acts as ‘a potent antioxidant, safeguarding the liver from oxidative stress. It aids in liver healing and boosts immunity.”

The Cleveland Clinic notes that this crucial vitamin—integral to nearly 200 biochemical reactions in the body—is essential for immune system functionality.”

However, this doesn’t mean rushing to purchase Vitamin E supplements.

Dr. Salhab advises consulting a doctor before considering supplements for increasing vitamin E intake, as improper use may have ‘significant side effects’.

Instead, he suggests obtaining vitamin E through foods like avocados, olive oil, spinach, broccoli, blackberries, kiwis, mangos, nuts, and hazelnuts.

Ultimately, as the Cleveland Clinic stresses, maintaining a well-rounded diet that includes enough vitamins C, A, and D, as well as folic acid, iron, selenium, and zinc, is crucial. Quite a tall order, isn’t it?

Wishing you the best of luck in your health journey.
