Gen Z girls ‘dread adulthood’ after grocery store trip exposes high food costs

Two teenagers from Generation Z recently encountered the harsh realities of life during a grocery shopping trip.

Anyone who regularly buys groceries will be well aware that prices are currently quite high and show no signs of decreasing.

According to a survey reported by CNBC in June, food prices have surged by an alarming 25 percent recently.

It’s not just food that’s getting more expensive; costs for things like cable TV, gasoline, and housing have also been on the rise.

In essence, adulthood can be challenging – a fact these teenagers came to understand firsthand.

A TikTok video shared by one of the girls’ mothers captures their realization. In the clip, the two 17-year-olds express a wish to remain young forever.

Amber Morris, who posted the viral video, asked the teens: “So girls, what have we learned about grocery shopping?”

“I don’t want to be an adult,” Amber’s daughter replied. “It takes me an hour’s worth of working, and I still can’t even buy this… it’s three pieces of chicken.”

Just wait until they see how much a McDonald’s meal costs now.

Titled ‘adulting is tough!’ by Amber, the relatable video has garnered over a million views on TikTok.

Viewers have responded to the video, pointing out that the girls still have much more to learn about adulthood.

“Wait until they learn about how the money they make is taxed, and when they spend it it’s taxed again, and at the end of the year they are taxed again on their money that was already taxed and taxed,” one person commented.

Another said: “It hits different when you realize how many hours of your life is stolen by inflation.”

Many echoed the sentiments of Amber’s daughter, expressing that they also don’t enjoy being adults.

“Yea I’m done being an adult. At 52 I’m ready for Senior Citizen status,” one user commented.

Another agreed: “Me neither. I don’t want to be an adult anymore.”

“I called my mom crying the first time I went food shopping after moving out,” shared another TikTok user.

Someone else remarked: “Welcome to adulthood. We all don’t wanna be here.”
