Goldie Hawn sets the record straight after Meryl Streep claimed they had ‘beef’ on film set

Goldie Hawn has responded to the playful talk about a supposed “beef” with Devil Wears Prada star Meryl Streep.

The pair famously appeared together in the 1992 comedic horror Death Becomes Her, playing Hollywood actresses trying to reclaim their youth with the help of a mysterious potion.

While promoting Devil Wears Prada 2, Streep looked back on that era and jokingly suggested there was some tension on set—though her comments were clearly delivered in a lighthearted way.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Streep teased that Hawn’s punctuality habits were at the center of it.

“Goldie, she was always late to set,” Streep recently said in an interview promoting Devil Wears Prada 2.

She then contrasted that with her own approach, explaining that she’s typically early and can be “annoying,” while Hawn would arrive in a red convertible after driving herself in.

“But she was so adorable. And I’m always on time, you know, and annoying. But she’s late, and she had a red convertible, I remember, and she’d drive herself to set. So that was probably the problem.”

The actor continued by describing how the dynamic played out, saying Hawn would show up apologizing, while others would find it charming—before she punctuated the story with the punchline that she had “beef.”

The Mamma Mia! star contiued: “She’d drive herself to set. She had her hair all … ‘Oh, gosh, sorry!’ And everybody thought, ‘Oh, she’s so cute,’” before laughing: “Yeah, I had beef with her.”

Streep also made it clear the “beef” was a long-resolved joke, adding that the two have remained close.

After the clip made the rounds online, Hawn was asked about it too—and she didn’t dispute the gist of the story.

In comments to Entertainment Tonight, she owned up to her tendency to run late, while emphasizing the friendship between them and the fact it’s become an ongoing gag.

“I’m 15 minutes late to everything, it’s unbelievable,” the Snatched star admitted. “But I think we got through that.

“We’ve been such good friends for so long. But it’s just our joke. I was too late on the set.

“Maybe she was too early, I don’t know!” she laughed. “Sometimes when you’re too early you’re still waiting for somebody and you think, ‘Oh god, where the hell is she!’”

Separately, Streep’s name also came up this week amid Met Gala chatter, with some fans still hoping she’ll eventually make an appearance—especially given the long-running comparisons between Miranda Priestly and fashion editor Anna Wintour.

But that seems unlikely, based on what her representatives have said about the annual event.

“Meryl has been invited to the Met Gala for many years but has never attended,” her reps told People.

“While she appreciates Vogue, Anna [Wintour] and her incredible imagination and stamina—it has never quite been her scene.”
